Conditioning in the summer

I would imagine that the people doing their dogs in the heat of the summer, in the south,,,
must know their dogs well and only take the ones that excel and recover faster in these conditions
and alot of times the gamest dogs in best shape and quickest recovery beat those hard fast starters...

Old Joe from carolina kennels told me when he beat the non sportsmen tant in the eighties,,,
that some play chess and others play checkers...
joe gave the dogs up and became a world class chess master
whoms victories are credited to study bulldog warfare amongst men...

Was well aware and was shaped under such and understanding that such ways were a non issue. And Mine were built to handle much more. He was taught what we already knew.

I can see why one would be scared to race in the summer in southern heat. Any dog can look like a good one if you baby it and always try to have it at its best advantage. Some of you call working in the heat a disadvantage to a dog, I call Bullshit on that because imo if it can't be depended upon to do the same in any weather I wouldn't call it a bulldog.

Being a " bulldog" as you say would be a state of mind!! "state of mind" and actual physical activity are completely different things. The mind can say go but physically the body may not be able. It's a simple equation physical movement causes heat.. Hot weather and physical heat cause temps to rise faster.. body temp rising and physical activity causes lactic acid.. lactic acid causes the body to breakdown and reach its threshold faster so in my opinion there is no true benefit. Once the body starts shutting down its a wrap!
I can agree with you if your gonna run in the heat prepare in the heat.. But if you think you individual will perform better in the heat rather then in cooler temps your sadly mistaken and to me if your not giving your individual the best opportunity to prepare for a contest one must learn to be patient and considerate.

IMO you prepare IN the heat FOR the heat! The South is hot in the summer, REAL HOT. Performance can be degraded by heat, but the preparation in the heat prolong the inevitable. When it's too hot we don't work. What is too hot? Your animals body language will tell you. By what some of what you guys are saying Southerners should wait til early mornin or late night to work and show. For some, that's not possible. Whether it's work or family we have to do what we have to do. I used to work a split so I only had midday to work one, in the heat. If it was too hot we did what we could, simple. Don't baby your charge, but don't be stupid either. Sports teams don't AVOID the heat!!!! They work with and around it!!!!! Spring training, scrimmages, and drills are not usually done at night! The gym is hot for a reason! If your gym has the AC on all the time, find another gym. They are not serious about anything but keeping ppl comfy and money rolling in. Hell, EVEN THE BAND PRACTICED IN THE SUMMER! They use heat index warning these days. When I was coming up, passing out happened in the heat. Separated the men from the boys coach would say. Was it the smartest thing? Not all the time. If you want to be the best you have to train harder than the best. If that means a couple of hot, uncomfortable days, fuck it. Pay the cost to be the boss. No one is saying work you animal til it burns up/out! Stop before that, use common sense

. Sports has came such a long ways ,back in the day people thought thirst was a weakness! When my dad started playing football he said they got one water break and they drank from the spicket and the coach counted how many times you swallowed as you were only allowed so many drinks depending on size! Amazes me that no one ever died ! Lol When I played things were better ,we had Gatorade and we took some breaks but they were short ,not long enough to get comfy lol.All of what I said happened in the hot Alabama sun.

Our gym gets whatever outside temp is plus some. (*metal building ) We run a fan in the bay door. . Training & conditioning shouldn't be comfortable. . Well I'm our 1 room where we do ladies class I run the air about 77.. But still yet in the ring, you drip sweat. . Except for the guys getting fight ready & cutting or holding weight it's free water, but only in between rounds & that's 1 minute at a time

YES SIIIIIRRR! "Water is for the weak!!!" I can hear it now! We had 10-15 seconds to drink per person depending on "how fresh you looked." Break lasted as long as it took for your group to drink. In kickboxing and boxing coach counted to 20, then he pulled you off the fountain.

Like an air cooled v-twin motor - in the cool temperatures, dog will be more efficient at shedding heat resulting in better performance. In high heat, slow the pace down. Even the pool or open water can warm in summer months to the point a dog can quickly overheat if over exerted.

Keep the dog off hot surfaces (like asphalt), minimize direct sun exposure, have shade and cool water available. Less high intensity exercise in favor of low to moderate intensity. More breaks.

Nature of course I agree that one will do better in a cooler temp as oppose to a hotter one. My stance is simply there are times when one has no choice but to Condition in the heat, and that I never walk Into it thinking OK I know I'm not gonna get it in as good a shape as I would in December. I'm walking in saying OK let's do what we gotta do to get this shit done

Something you and I both agree on.. Where I'm from December-February is usually out of the question as far as getting one in shape.
I like to give them a few mths to relax because I keep mine in pretty decent shape 3/4 of the year patiently waiting.

sounds like one of my old boxing coaches . I'm not sure he ever heard of water. while in the gym we didn't have access . funny thing is I never thought about it until I started reading this thread.I must admit we did have air conditioning, seeing as the gym was located in a community center. I also just realized it was pretty much the same thing when i went thru basic training. Guess we didn't need much since it was FORT KNOX,KY in January.
