  3. I think I have to correct my "protection dog" statement. I dont have the intention to get a 100% protection dog. But I read a lot of interviews, articles, some books and watched a few youtube videos which explainded that a "real" APBT has this natural instinct to protect his family. This is also my own experience. This dog knows who is a "good" and who is a "bad" person. Plus he is or he should be game/tough/willing - there are a lot of words, I hope you know what I mean. I love this breed with all the good and bad sides. I really do. I dont want a barking, ugly (in my opinion ugly) German Shepard Police dog.

I do know a person who train police dogs and an instructor for Schutzhund for 20 years. He told me that he trained some Pit Bulls as well. They were no police dogs. They did the "Schutzhund Ausbildung". He was absolutely thrilled about the physical strengh, the speed and the biting power. And he told me that a "normal" dog like German Shepards, Dobermänner and Rottweiler stops 80% - 90% of human attacks. It depends on the aggression and will power of the attacking. But no man has the will power of a Pit Bull. There are a few reports of dogs which protected the family although massiv injuries and pain. They can be found on google. That police-dog-trainer is convinced that no Shepard, no Rottweiler, no Dobermann would take this tremendous pain and keep defending the family.

I am sorry to ask this question again, but I really have to: If I meet some new people/breeders, what questions I should ask? What questions not? There is no hurry and I absolutely get the meaning of take some time and slow down. But maybe I am stupid. Maybe my English is not good enough to understand how to talk to people. Maybe both. However, I would be glad, really glad, to get some advice what I should speak about.

A real apbt generally speaking is fairly useless as a family protection dog no matter what the books say. Most are just to open and friendly towards strangers, if they had this natural instinct then they wouldn't be the most stolen breed in the world.

Just talk about the dogs and that persons experiences of the breed. Don't worry about specific questions until you have a better understanding or knowledge of the breed. When you do you'll know what question to ask.

If you're from the Netherlands or surrounding countries follow the PBCN club. They have 2 ADBA shows a year and a couple sports event and sometimes share international events (Italy, Poland etc).

Lol ignore or maybe delete this post, didn't see you were from Austria.

  7. There is a difference between being friendly to a stranger and defense your family. No Pit in this world would be friendly to a stranger after he threatenend, hurt or killed his owner. Your right if you say the breed would probably not attack a burglar. But you are wrong if you say a Pit would not defense his family in some serious danger. Please delete the picture of a dog which is barking by every sound. Thats not what I am looking for. Not my opinion of this breed and not what I have read (except the book written by Joseph Colby).

Thanks for the advice. I wont worry about specific questions anymore.

  8. Its a great post. Thank you! I have to travel. I cant wait to go to an event in Austria or Germany. The border to Germany is not far away. Poland

As much as I do like reading about my favorite breed I think people get the wrong impression about the protection instinct of pitbulls...Mr Stratton and others sometimes romanticize that aspect of the breed, not every dog will protect it's family with his/her own life lol

I don't know why but this story popped in my head.Years ago in a small neighborhood the family pets were being killed ,most were thinking coyotes .Just so happened I had a aunt that lived in this neighborhood and her dog had got killed and I was over doing the burying.Ok so I diggin a whole and out of the corner of my eye I see a black dog watching me ,I look over and sure enough it's what looks to be a black APBT and I said hmmm coyotes my ass.lol he comes up to me wagging his tail like a big ole baby and you could tell he just loved to be handled.Anyways I didn't alarm anyone and explained to the owner what was going on ,would have looked funny to have a chained dog in this type of setting ,upper middle class.I built her a pen out of cattle panels and didn't charge her for labor ,it was her sons dog and he was off in Iraq ,early 90s.Far as I know ,nobody ever knew and no other dogs were slayed. Lol.

It's great when Karma bites someone in the ass. That video of those two Pit Bull mutts in South Africa Killing the suspected burglar was a rough watch though.

  17. Humans have different characters. Dogs have different characters. In a litter you find different characters. But there are some basic specifications that every breede should have. A Pit Bull is animal aggressiv. A Rottweiler is human aggressiv. Pit Bulls should be absolutely great in the Pit. Rottweiler not. Rottweiler should be great watchdogs. Pit Bulls not. A Pit Bull should be as tough as nails, probably the toughest creature ins this world. Rotweiler are not. Thats the Bottom line. I think until this point everyone agrees. I am aware that there is difference between theory and practice. This difference is caused by every breeder, the bloodline, the Dam and Sire and probably the education of the puppy. BUT no Pit, no Rottweiler, even no Chiwawa would wag his tail If his owner/family member get hurt or killed in the meanwhile. Fellas... please, what are you talking about? This makes no sense at all. To defende the pack/family is a basic instinkt in almos every creature in this world. Would you do nothing if your parents are attacked? Hell no. Except you are a dam sissy. Ok, so let us play this throug.

Case 1: A Burglar breaks into my house. My dog is a Chiwawa.
I am sitting on my couch while some asshole breaks in, because he thinks nobody is at home. This asshole attacks me with a knife, my hardcore Chiwawa attacks the burlgar (=basic instinkt) but get a kick to the face and is done. My dog is dead. I am dead.

Case 2: A Burglar breaks into my house. My dog is a Rottweiler.
I am sitting on my couch while some asshole breaks in because he thinks nobody is at home. My Rottweiler notices the asshole and attacks him (Rottweiler = a good watchdog). But this asshole is pumped up with some cocain and he does not retreat. My Rottweiler got injured serveral times, could not get the pain anymore and runs away. I am dead. My dog is dead (rember the 10% - 20%).

Case 3: A Burglar breaks into my house. My dog is a Pit Bull.
I am sitting on my couch while some asshole breaks in because he thinks nobody is at home. My dog notices the asshole but is happy to meet a new person (not a human aggressiv breed). The pumped up crack-head starts stabbing my dog, he fight back (or do you think he keeps wagging his tale?) and got injured serveral times, could not get the pain anymore and runs away. I am dead. My dog is dead.

Case 4: A Burglar breaks into my house. My dog is a game bred/origin/Colby Pit Bull born 1905.
I am sitting on my couch while some asshole breaks in because he thinks nobody is at home. My dog notices the asshole but is happy to meet a new person (not a human aggressiv breed). The pumped up crack-head starts stabbing my dog, he fight back and got injured serveral times, but he keeps on fighting because he is the toughesst creature in the world (= Pit Bull in his origin). Asshole dead. My dog maybe dead. I am not.

What I try to say: 1. There are basic (animal) instincts. 2. Breed specifics. 3. Dog/Breeder specifics. The APBT specifics should be: Gameness. Intelligence. Absolute obedience. That's what I have read and heard a thousand times. Maybe Joseph L. Colby lied in his book and there was no Pit kept the fuel and chicken save. Or his dogs were different. He has written the book almost 100 years ago. Do you agree or not?

It's not so cut and dry.....sometimes in a litter you get a game dog another might be a cur...I have had some dogs that were naturally protective and others that weren't,Im just saying you have got to judge each one individually. If I were going to get a dog for protection why not get one that's bred for it?...

  20. I dont want a guard dog. I dont like Sheperd dogs. I dont want use my Pit Bull as a guard dog. I do love Pit Bulls. Your Pit bull would protect you in a serious danger. Why is everybody picking on "a Pit Bull is no gurad/defense dog". I know that. I never said that a Pit Bull would be a better guard/watch dog as a Sheperd. I only said: If some try to kill you, every dog will protect your life, and Pit Bull in his origin would do better as any other breed, because he SHOULD be game.
