I soak mine in 5 gallon bucket with a mixture of clorox and water for 1 day to kill any parasites then I soak it again in the 5 gallon bucket with a mixture of salt and water for 1 day then take it out of bucket rub salt over hide hang it up and let it cure in the sun. There are many ways to do it everyone has there own preferences.

Just wash it clean with soap and water, rinse well, then put salt and hang to dry in sunlight.

Heah STPFAN, ERASER here, the above way to do it is the same way I do it but sometimes I wait till it's dried then I scrape the hide of it's fat with a hatchet head then work it over until it's pliable, from there I lightly add Peanut oil to soften it up a bit more then dry it again. I use the deer hide on the flirt & spring pole and the dogs go crazy ! I've also used coon and possum hides etc . . ..

go to a country butcher they will sell the odd ones, they normally have a taker already for the hides, but you can get the odd 1 or 2 for $20 here anyway!

Best hides are BOAR hides toughest and most durable hides there is too cure it scrap as much fat off as you can rub rock salt all over hide and let sit out in the sun after you can soak it in clorox bleach/water then let dry again in sun thats it.

Hi there. A friend of mine is having a cow butchered soon and they're giving me the hide. Can you give me exact numbers so I can cure it with this method? And what type of salt do you use? I've searched Google and it keeps giving me complex methods or methods that require chemicals that I can't get in Illinois without a license. I really don't want my dogs chewing on something that required me to cure with battery acid anyways. This forum was sonething that showed up on my search when i typed in "curing cow hides with salt" so i figured joining and asking wouldn't hurt!

    Thank you.

There is plenty of hide curing on youtube. I thought you had to scrape it first or it would rot? I have a deer hide from last year sitting in my freezer may thaw it out and give these methods a try. Do these methods work to keep the fur intact with the hide?
