Difference

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by Thepitmaster, Oct 13, 2016.

  1. aware that ASTs and APBTS aren't the same due to one remaining a working dog and one is for show, but what is the difference tempermemt wise? Is their a difference in attitude or working ability? I ask because I want to get my amstaff who is a year old into some sports.

In my opinion american staffs are a thicker dog with a different build. They have less dog aggression and gameness. As for sports they is no reason why a american staff could not be competitive in any sport there are still athletic dogs. What sports did you have in mind? I would think about weight pull and perhaps shutzhund if I had a american staff.

I agree with Box Bulldog, that the AST are a much heavier boned & muscled dog, but I would also like to point out that APBT's have been used by folks for quite some time, just for show too.
I had some good friends in the early 80's where the husband used to have some real good pit bulldogs at one time, but after marriage decided to go with AST's so his wife could also be involved and they could travel to shows and continue to have the dogs in their retirement.
As far as being less dog aggressive, nope! Every one of his dogs were beasts and as far as being less game(you are probably right) but I sure would'nt want any one of them getting the first bite...lol
Whatever sport you want to try, your dog will enjoy it, no matter what breed name you call him.
