A nutria is essentially a three-foot long rat with long orange fangs. Geniuses introduced them to North America to harvest their fur and they became an invasive species, like mammalian kudzu. Bull Plug hunted nutria with Alligator's sibling Rennie B and ever since reading that story I have dreamed of someday doing the same. Have any folks here done it? When I was a kid I used to hunt gophers with hounds. I imagine bulldogs and Staffies would have a field day hunting nutria. (Is there still a bounty on nutria in Louisiana?)

Seems like it would be fun to toss a dog right in the middle of a group of em and see how long it takes to dispatch them . Great exercise I’d imagine especially in some swampy water

I follow a guy's page on FB from Oregon that hunts nutria with heavy OFRN dogs. I would assume maybe more folks do hunt them where they have them. I've never seen a nutria myself.

They used to be here in CA but they were supposedly eradicated. If they are back it would not be surprising.

  6. There's one at my work. We set up traps but the prick keeps dodging them. But here in sw Washington we have em.

Here is a skull and a map of North America that shows where they are established. I was surprised that they are found as far north as British Columbia, since they are a South American species.

Set a bulldog with a good nose in there at night (a Patterdale would likely be chewed to smithereens by the monster). I wonder what deadbrain introduced them to the Pacific Northwest.

If they are here in CA, I would be thrilled to go up north with a couple of VBK dogs. The ones I have owned have all been too small for feral swine, but I think they could hold their own with any rodent, even a damn capybara.

Wikipedia lists June 2006 as the upload date. (They oughta update that map. :-/ ) Nutria may have re-established themselves in CA by now because it only takes a short while for them to reproduce explosively, like feral boars.

  14. Haha I was talking bout a co worker nobody likes. We do have a legit rat problem tho and I've let my dog go on em. Them things get mean back! But the boss called pest control so now there's traps up n they stumble around all poisoned. So no more dog on rats.
