Hello fellow Dogmen and Dogwomen. The APBT as been apart of my family for the past two generations. All pups were purchased through peddlers however Im now able to acquire a pup or two from a reputable breeder. My question is...

Are there any current discussions in the forum that list the different popular bloodlines and their personalities, demeanor, mannerisms, and/or other traits.

If so, can you please provide the link or please feel free to provide your personal feedback and/or experiences with the bloodlines you've worked with.

    Thanks in advance.

I'm a Red Boy Snooty fan. Most of my dog are high strung and can bark for hours on end,. most of the time just to hear their brains rattle. I have had a few I thought would be good additions inside the house but those are few and far between. Woul they learn and adapt? Probably so, but it would quite the battle til they adjusted.

Most of the dogs are hard workers but I now have a couple that I am not all that happy with as far as their willingness to put forth effort. I am a big fan of hand walking dogs. I try not to argue the benefits to the dog but the benefits for me are huge. I have two now that use my legs for slalom racing. It is quite the headache. First time I have been frustrated by a dog in a long time.

Personally, I think you can plug in any strain/family to the above paragraph. Every family will have every trait within its individuals.

Not sure if that helps. Welcome and good luck with your search.

Thanks Slim12. That was a very very hepful and informative response. The reason why I say that is because Im from northern NJ and currently rent an apartment at the moment. We basically live on top of each other in this area and having your Red Boys and Snooties barking all day and night is asking for trouble with the neighbors lolzz. Thats the reason why I started this thread. To possibly narrow my selection down to a specific gene pool that fits my current living situation and enviorment without sacrificing quality or my interest in a specific line.

Also, hand walking in this area is a "must", and that's certainly not a topic that should be up for debate.

I'd get a blue amstaff or one of them Marsha woods dog. Something that ain't high strong or from game dog's. They don't make good for apartment type dogs. The last thing you want is the dog eating through your walls trying to get something. Game dog are high strung and animal aggressive. They ain't for everyone and will take all your time. They may look good and the thought of them may sound appealing but the reality is a lot different than you might think. Till you spend time around them not just visiting with someone selling you one. Don't even consider owning a game dog. You will waist time, money and headaches you probably aren't ready for.

Thanks Ben Brockton. You just remined me of a few incidents where we had a pup that chewed and climbed his way out of everything...no matter the material. However, my mind is already made my Brotha.

There are laidback and hyper ones to find in every bloodline. Point is to raise it properly and don't let the dog being a menace to society which is in most cases to blame on his owner. A real gamedog living somewere in an appartement is a real challenge, is it wise?... Don't know your intentions with the dog but a Nice bull terriër or English Staffordshire bull terriër should be a lot easier adept in a appartement then a gamedog full of vigor. Good Luck in your search.

Thanks FWK. My intentions are to familiarize myself with the various lines, thier history, their contributions, and compatibility when paird with others. I haven't had any dogs for almost 7 years. My last two were AmStaffs and both lived to 12-14years. Both were house dogs as well, however, the APBT has and will always be my choice of bull. Im now an adult, and ready for an APBT (aside from being an apartment dweller). Owning, maintaining and preserving a piece of thier history for years to come is my ultimate goal. My apologies of I seem all over the place.

    Thanks

Have known many housed like you with game dogs. Some did well some not at all and were making headlines in the newpapers for all the wrong reasons ( goddamn!!!) . It is all up to you and ....your dog and yes your Neighbours. There is good info out there about the breed and as well an awesome lot of BS. Living out on a farm with a lot of land isn't shaped for everyone for one reason or another. A city dweller have to take care a bit more strickly with all eyes preying on him. Just simple said, be a responsible owner all Times.

I breed dogs with a purpose.
I try to stick with the hunting type dogs.
Even though they are bred for the woods , they can fit in the city with a select few.
My dogs are not open to anyone with a dollar.
The are for the Seasoned dogman only.
These are guidelines most should follow before they just sell to anyone.
This breed is not mean to be house hold pets that anyone could have.
The same way you select breeding's you select owners.
This breed is too much dog for just anyone to own & some families are just too much dog for just any dogman to own.
    Traditional working dogs.

I like the third pedigree. Especially the dogs thru the Lady Bird dog. Her brother Bobby was a bulldog and I had a daughter of his name Red Ruby. She was the deal as well. Red Boy dogs to the bone.

    Looks like real workers.

    Good stuff.
Lady Bird was just a bit smarter than most Redboy dogs I had seen before .
I tightened that same combination as Shot Clip & Mango up quite a bit since then had maintained good results each generation.

Her niece Ruby Red had above average intelligence for a heavy Red Boy dog. She figured some things out. She had to be worked on multiple pieces of equipment to keep her fresh. I thought she simply got bored really easy. She would burn a mill up for a couple days but if it were three in a row she did not really see the point. Skip a day or do something different and come back to the mill and she was a ball of fire for another couple days.

Nice family of dogs you have there. Really nice.

KH, how are you making out with your search?
here’s my opinion about “game dogs” and the various bloodlines. I think even on this forum there are some misconceptions among a lot of the lurkers. The term “game” simply means willingness to fight to the death every SINGLE time. No rhyme or reason- just game. That is the single best/worst quality of these dogs. Some might say game is “when the will to win overcomes the will to survive”. We’ll that’s cute, and partially true. It has zero to do with “winning” for these dogs and everything to do with terminating the opponent. Winning is a human term and associated with money/ego/etc. the dogs don’t give a fuck about winning. It is the handlers responsibility to pull his dog when the outcome of the match is evident. It’s that simple. Thugs death roll, and dogmen pull their dogs realize the mistakes made and if they can be fixed. This is where all your various bloodlines come into play. Wind/muscle/bone/etc can all be found in different lines. It’s your job to find the best cocktail and fine tune it to your liking. I believe wind being most important. You might find some looks you like more than others, but for the most part the unbelievable high energy will be true across the board. Instead of Sheetrock, hang isolation panels. 99% of the people I know(including myself) shouldn’t own a true game dog. I feel like game dogs are shrouded in mystery and they shouldn’t be. Unless you’re doing game dog things- you don’t need one.

Hmmm...year old thread but OK. I have experience here, lived in the Ghetto in upstate NY. First, this is a 25/8 project requiring MASSIVE VIGILENCE and tons and tons of work. You have to get the dog out and not only walk it at least 3 times a day, but vigorously exercise it for at least an hour. Every day. You have to do this while 100% keeping it away from every 4 legged creature imaginable or DISASTER will happen. Insane things will happen that even the most creative of minds can't predict, but you better do so and nEVER make a mistake. Ever. No matter what happens, it will be your fault. They can't even breath the same air. You will need a crate, and if you work a 8 hour job with a commute that won't work unless you totally exhaust the dog which will take a long time. I was able to do it because my schedule (graduate school) enabled me to never be away from the house for more than 3 or 4 hours. My life was work and dog, every day all the time. FRom before 9 in the morning to 11 at night, every day. If you walk and work the dogs hard you might get away with a longer crate time, and that is if they are older and not barkers. It helps if every house on the street except your is a crack house. Criminals tend not to call the cops as much. You are in NJ, so probably lots of crack houses and crack heads. Only criminals have guns in NJ, but the thugs usually won't mess with you if you have this breed.

I used to live next to a big park, but the problem is there are other animals at the park, and you must never, ever encounter those other animals. Your sweet puppy may seem to get along fine with other animals, but one day out of nowhere a flip will switch and you will have a lawsuit on your hands or worse. Are you ready for that? If you can find a secluded place that no other animal ever gets to...again EVER, you might have a chance. One thing is, other respectable people with dogs are not going to come around the homeless crack head section, so you might be able to work the dog there. Another option is running the dog on the bike. But keep in mind that road work on concrete can easily cause paw damage. These dogs will work even if in pain. Like I said my street was all crack house so there was little traffic and no non criminal person would ever go there to walk their dogs. Even so you must ALWAYS have a breaking stick and know how to use it. Do you have experience breaking up fights? If not, when you see one of these dogs go it is going to be a shocking experience, and you might not be ready for it.

OK, I am just touching on the surface of requirements and things that can go wrong. There are many more. Think about all of this long and hard before you get this breed.
