And I already stated obedience is the foundation to the tracking and bitework. What you seem to forget is I'm not some hick with no idea what I'm speaking about. Been there done that burned the shirts... I'm the one who had a 90lbs whopper dog with the ability to down stay by a busy street who wouldn't flinch while I went back inside to cook dinner. I also would've picked him over a gun most days.

By ass backwards i meant if that's what you want to do you should already be at the club working with the club on obedience. I also gave you a "pit bull" oreinted club who does EXACTLY what you claim you want to do thats in/was in Houston but I'll keep being an ignorant hick. I've never been bitten on the dick by a dog or had to come to a forum for help house breaking a puppy.....

It is a good thread. Conversations, at least the good ones, spawn different conversations and eventually get back to the original topic, sometimes.

Because I like conversations about bulldogs I often 'hijack' threads with my ramblings. LOL

    Funny how that works.

I put a Sch b on a Rottweiler in the early 90's. He was an exceptional dog that excelled in both obedience and bite work. With a better trainer and better owner, he would have eventually nailed down the tracking requirement, but I was young and dumb.......things sometimes just play out that way.

Believe it or not, the Pit Bull is an excellent candidate for man-work. The issue is we have knocked them in the head for a hundred years for being a man-biter and it is just about a 'taboo' subject in the dogs. It is a non-factor because once you dub your dog for man-work no game dog people are coming to breed to them, so in effect, it will not pollute the gene pool with man dogs. Just works that way.

Just like Malinois, GSD and Rotts your biggest limiting factor will be nerve. 99% of the dogs in the world do not have the nerve to be a working dog. Unfortunately, the Pit Bull falls in there with his canine counterparts.

The Pit Bull will have enough prey drive to get thru most any form of training as long as his prey item is used to motivate him. The Pit Bull can attain a boat load of titles with prey drive alone.

The problem will be there has to be a certain amount of defensive drive and the Pit Bull as a community do not have all that much defensive drive. This is why they are so easily stolen. They are simply happy as hell to ride with anyone who will pet them on the head. They do get all the bad press but they are about the most people friendly dogs out there (see 'we knock them in the head comment').

Dog aggression is real and it can be dealt with thru tons of time, effort and training. Outing is just another obstacle. Outing is just as big a deal/training obstacle for other breeds as well, but it is an issue of training, time and effort.

Nerve will be the biggest obstacle of all to making a pit bull a true working type dog (man dog). We, as a community, have helped out the evolutionary progress in that regard.

But with all that said, a couple hundred years ago some sheep herder in Belgium, laughed and said, "You are going to what with my dog, and train him to do what against a man, and expect him to what????. He laughed and took his chunk of change.

From there the herders became the workers. It took a lot of years of breeding and selection to advance the breed. We bred in another direction so finding a pit bull that gives a pass on the last 100 years of selection will be tough. Doable, and possible, but rare and highly unlikely.

I am a fan of any dog that does what he was bred to do or what he was trained to do. A Beagle that will jump and run and his kinfolk who can sniff dope and bombs in an airport. It is a beautiful thing. A Lab that can retrieve a bird or find bodies in a river is outstanding.

And when you title that dog in whatever man sport you choose, again, I will be that dog's biggest fan.

But like I have said before, you can dig a hole with a hammer but there are much better options out there. Best of luck.

And keep me posted. I am hoping in a couple years I owe you and the community an apology for selling the idea short.

Great post Slim. Yes it is a major tenet of the breed that "they must not be human aggressive" in order to work in the pit, but the reality is many dogs willl gladly do bite work and love it.

But yes....it is considered a big no no and I understand that it will make me persona non grata in the pit bull community. Also, the Pit Bull faces bias in the IPO community. Schutzhund clubs are fairly small for 2 reasons: 1 it is a ton of work usually too much for a person with a real full time job. You are expected to work on the facilities, set up etc., and also of course all the work with the dog. More importantly, you have to be voted in by the other members. So for starters, the odds are already against me, not to mention the nearly 1 hour drive to get to the facility if I do make it.

What I am going to do in the meantime is obedience work. Even though the chances are that my dog and I may wash out, I am going to train her to the best of my abilities. These dogs are special and at a minimum I will at least spend time with a pup that is enjoyable to work with.

I most certainly never portrayed you as an ignorant hick....Vituperative, argumentative, and antagonistic would be more accurate. :)

Here is my logic for not contacting anyone at this point: I am just some yahoo with a Pit Bull. Unless and until I produce a dog that has a solid obedience foundation, I am unlikely to be accepted/voted in by any legit IPO club.

Having said that, Clay, since he specializes in Pit Bulls might be more receptive. However the contact number for Team No Fear had them in the Washington DC area, and their other activities (as per their web site) had them in the NC area. I would be thrilled to work with them if they did anything in the Houston area. Would you be kind enough to provide contact information for Clay?

We all get to know eachother better every conversation , it shows a lot of knowledge and show who we are in person . We learn a lot about the dogs but also about the doggers over here . It’s all about choises we make . We see and know more about someone by his actions than his words . Also the same in dogs , they can bark , growl and show teeth but it tells nothing about the quality of the dogs in action

As far as waiting to start obedience work until you are formally associated with a club, that is a very bad idea. It is better to start work long before you join a club, for many reasons. One of hem is you want to begin early and doing so at home enables this plus you do not have any distractions. In private allows you to closely observe your dog and how it learns without a bunch of people around.

Clays a sports agent in the Houston area. Pretty controversial guy but what he's done with his dogs is undeniable. I don't have personal contact info as me and dude do not like each other in the slightest. The "team" whole mission is to title out "pit bulls" in about every legal venue imaginable. I would think that Phil and Clay are both still in the Houston area. I'd either fb Clay Fonneville(spelling may be off) or just email the company page directly and explain the situation to them. Clay also did some mma training and thinks he's the baddest thing ever spit out of a cunt so yall could talk about that too. Don't bring your wife around though. He'll try to fuck her and when she won't go start a shit storm with you about it(watched it happen more than once).

Interesting...I could not find anyone under that name but will poke around a bit. What types of athletes does he manage? Get me some names if you can. If they are fighters he will be easy to find. I know pretty much everyone in that world, but not in other sports. Actually, I do know some people in the football world, but baseball and basketball I am pretty clueless.

They do have a contact number. Maybe I will call that and see if they refer me. Will email the company page first. As mentioned, I have my sights on the local (well 50 miles away) Schutzund club. In the meantime I am going to continue doing obedience work. The video I posted is quite good and the gal is pretty easy on the eyes.

You are generally correct. That is why I am shitting myself over this pup. She has been nailing recall w/ hardly any training since 9 weeks old. Now she is holding a sit stay while I walk 8-10 yards away, then coming on command.

That is my edge. My dogs parents may not be titled box champions (although you never really know here in Texas, so much is underground) but I have a 3 time winer and a 1 time winner in the grandparents. Although not impressive amongst the true fast lane guys, my dog is definitely NOT one of those chocolate or blue abominations. In the past all my dogs could at least dance for 20 minutes, either ahead or behind.
