Raw/Kibble Diet Mixed

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by APBT_Fan100, Sep 21, 2022.

  1. I have been some what looking into a mixed diet with kibble and raw meat. Getting a lot sources saying that its okay to do and some saying that it should simply be kibble or raw. I'm pretty satisfied with my pits current kibble (Purina Pro Plan) as it has been working pretty good. Was researching to see if I can get an even healthier diet/activity by adding in a raw diet (most likely lean ground turkey).

Just curious to see if anyone mixes, and if they do, what are the outcomes or recommendations?

    I mix all the time.

RAW is always better than bag food. But RAW usually ends due to inconvenience of prep and storage.

I buy chicken backs by the 40lb case. I feed mostly backs as a raw source and I also bags of beef fat. I am not into searching for that true balance when feeding the dogs. Some nights I will walk by and just toss them chicken backs or chunks of beef fat. Then dog food the next night. Sometimes it is a mix of both.

I have been doing this for nearly 30 years. I am sure there is vet or canine nutritionist who says I am killing my dogs and harming them with my feeding approach. I kinda sort of doubt it. LOL

  3. Thanks for the feedback. Planning to start it some time next week.

Definitely won't be buying a 40lb case right away but hoping she does well with the raw being mixed in. If it doesn't work, I'll probably just resort back to the kibble.

Aha someone probably would say that, but oh well lol. There's so many different opinions and recommendations on this topic it's hard to say that one person is right. Figured you just have to try it out for yourself and experiment.

You can also mix in ground egg shells. Very good for the dogs.

No balance here. A leg quarter, a half hand full of beef fat and a slice of bread with the wormer hidden on the inside.

My dogs and I have a real understanding with one another.

If they don't bite me they can live here is first and foremost.

If they turn their nose up at what I provide, then they don't live here.

I have had the best relationships of my life with my dogs.

(Same rules apply to people which may be why the dogs and I get along so good, people, not so much).

I would feed that before anything out of a bag.

I feed out of bag some as well and some days it is like the bowl in the pic. Some days I just drop big chunks of beef fat, a couple handfuls, as I walk by.

In the winter time I drop the beef fat in a big pot and soak the dog food with the fatty water to ensure hydration.

On the fence rail I lay out a piece of bread for each dog. I put the wormer on the bread and fold it up. I walk by and toss it to each dog. They are wormed before they realize what they swallowed.

And like said before, I have fed straight RAW and straight bag food and pretty much any combination in between.

These dogs can survive on anything and can actually thrive with just a little more effort.

  9. Thanks for the feedback slim, super helpful. Good to know that you've had success with both diets over the years. I'm excited to see how my dog will do on the mixed diet.

Just out of curiosity, do you put the piece of bread for carbohydrates or just for the wormer?

    Just for the wormer.

Carbs really do nothing for a dog other than to work the gut and make big piles.

Go to mushing.com and read "Rendering the sense of fats" and then go to Sportsvet.com and read "Feeding the Canine Athlete".

    Great insight.
