my Greco coach was best friends with randy. Stood up in his first wedding. I trained many many times with randy. He was excellent at smashing you from the clinch in open space.

heavy top game but slow moving. Inch by inch. Not wide open throwing submission after submission at you.
Rickson / rodrigo whole approach was you don’t need a back up plan or worry about losing position because if you took the arm you finished it.

don’t know how long you been around the sport but it has drastically changed now. When I first got into it everything had a real hazing process it to. Real real rough shit.
Blue or white gis only type of shit lol

one of the craziest experiences I’ve had was rolling with Marcelo Garcia. I always heard flow like water lol
So I expected this unique feeling except what I got was a fucking gorilla knee on stomach trying to break my sternum lol
    Good times

or the time I sparred rumble at the original chute boxe in Beverly Hills. He was still fighting at 170 but walking around 210-220. Power that man generated was insane.

these dogs remind me of old hard jiu jitsu. The standard is there but everyone has they’re style and approach.

Not counting wrestling in High School I started BJJ in 1998. We were a wrestling oriented school, much much rougher than most BJJ schools. But even more traditional schools back then did waaaaay more stand up. 30% of the training was on the feet. It was called "Closing he Distance." There are still some schools that retain the self defense aspect (look for one that still trains stand up or better yet is run by former wrestlers like my friend James Markel) but sport BJJ has lost much of its self defense aspect. I saw a lady carrying her baby around during warm ups the other day. If you did that in a wrestling warm up the baby would perish, or at a minimum end up in CPS.

Its all about money. Accountants an soccer moms aren't going to pay $250 a month to get smashed. BJJ training has to be watered down. That is why the best fighters will continue to come from wrestling. I respect the technical advances that sport BJJ has made, but that's about it.

Yes sir that'd be him. He's super impressive for being a big guy and technically sound.

I also probably still have those pics of you and Randy on one of these old phones laying around.

I do have to add a caveat about your leg lock statement. I agree with you except if Palhares is within 20 miles of any leg lock. If so the leg will destroy itself out of fear lol.

I know years ago Eddie Bravo was trying to start a "Combat Jui Jitsu" organization where they did no gi and ground strikes to make bjj more practical in mma and street fights. Did it ever take off? I always loved the idea but life progressed and I didn't stay up on the sports like I used too.

I toyed around in a gym for a couple years close to 15 years ago. Met Matt and his brother once each while there. Both seemed super cool but it could've just been because of who's gym we were at. They never produced any killers(while i was there)but they did produce Tamikka Bents. She's known for getting her skull cracked by that tranny Falon Fox.

Ok now I'll go back to reading instead of telling my lame ass war stories lol.

Her brother Bobby is probably the strongest person I've ever had the displeasure of being partnered up with. We did a ground and pound drill where you tried to drag the person striking off the grappling dummy. 2 of us couldn't pull him/drag him off. He one arm hooked me around the waist and slung me off it like I was a little kid. Talk about a humbling experience.

I forgot all about that dude cracking that chicks skull lol I’m definitely searching for that video

Tucked his dick committed aggravated battery and then retired. Fairytale ending to his career.

Palhares has gotta be seriously unstable. Dudes who fought him had to have balls just knowing this dude is gonna try to cripple you

Tamikka was about the friendlest person you'd ever meet too. Its beyond fucked up what happened to her. I believe that fight retired her too.

Just because it is morning and babbling before I crash......

I grew up in a small town in the rural south and based on my ignorance to the world, the martial arts world stopped at Tae Kwon Do and the Hapkido class that was local. Jui Jitsu may as well been something on the Chines menu. Plain ignorant to the world.

I joined the service and when I was waiting for my dive school class to start I was working out in the base gym. There was this guy in the corner kicking a bag like nothing I had ever seen. He hit that bag with every part of his body and it looked impressive. We hit it off. His dad moved to Brazil in the 50's with the British American Tobacco Co (and so did my brother-in-law's brother) and married a German immigrant near Rio. Their kid went to college in Houston and then joined the service. He was a Muay Thai guy. (no idea what that was at the time either)

We worked out a few times and then we sparred to mess around. Of course, having no training, he spanked me all over the mat. It was bad. So having him by ten to fifteen pounds and several inches, I decided my best chance to stop him from kicking the shit out of me was to double leg him and take him to the ground and big dog him. I actually caught him off guard and stumped him perfectly. It was almost like he bounced when I drove him to the mat. Before his back hit the mat on that 'bounce' my arm started to hurt and then I could not breathe. The world started to get black. It was maybe not that fast but it felt like it.

At that very point in my life I had my first knowledge of jui jitsu.

In case you are wondering, it is not just something on the Chinese menu.

Maybe its because of this look that some people think that Mayday had some of them. They look like heavy weight pits.
Im not saying that the rumor is true tho, nobody can say for sure
