Amputated tail care?

My APBT banged his tail up on the edge of a cabinet and it had to be amputated :(
Does anyone have any tips how to prevent irritating his skin like this? We use nonstick pads covered with plastic bandage for animals, but the nonstick pad seems to irritate the skin.

At first it was just a few centimeters at the tip that lost blodcirkulation, and had to be amputated, but he kept damaging it and it wouldnt heal.

I truly feel like shit that this has happened to him, i know dogs dont get stuck in the past but i cant help to feel like its my fault, and that having a stump will ruin his balance etc. Ive had so many sleepless nights over this :/

I live in Sweden and ive never heard of blu-kote?

Why not keep his in a cage most of the time until it heals?
