Toledo man gets prison for drugs, dog fighting
    Guilty plea nets 18-month sentence
    BLADE STAFF

A Toledo man whose criminal conduct, prosecutors said, escalated from drug and gun offenses to dog fighting was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months in prison.

Clarence McNeal III, 34, of the 1300 block of Moore Street, pleaded guilty Aug. 3 to dog fighting, having a weapon while under disability, and possession of cocaine and drugs before Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Myron Duhart.

At sentencing, the judge cited McNeal*s lengthy criminal history and apparent inability to change despite two prior prison stays. Police searched his home and found drugs, drug paraphernalia, and guns that McNeal was forbidden to have in his home, as well as a cell phone with video footage of dog fighting.

“You*ve got drugs. You*ve got guns. Now you*ve got the dog fighting, which is serious stuff,” the judge said. “If you abuse animals, it is a very thin line to abusing individuals.”

Co-defendant Lora Grinter, 23, previously pleaded guilty to dog fighting and was placed on community control for three years.

Judge Duhart allowed McNeal to report Thursday to begin serving his sentence at the request of his attorney, Phil Carlisle.

so he got charged with dog fighting for having a fight on his phone or evidence of himself in the box? Possessing fighting footage is legal so i'm confused...

He had drugs and guns in the house and most likely plead guilty to the lesser charge ( dog fighting )

He plead out to all three and got eighteen months. He could ha e got that for the drugs and guns alone. In my state eighteen months is about the shortest prison sentence you can get so he actually didn't get a bad deal. But he could have beat dogfighting wrap, they probably offered him a light sentence to plea to all counts just so they could make headlines for locking up a "dogfighter"
