Having said that, most casual fans simply do not understand the difference between the average guy and world class fighters. There is no comparison. You have to actually train with some to understand. Not saying I was the best, but spent time in the D'Matto camp (my first boxing coach was Peter Allendo Mike Tyson's stablemate). Taught for Renzo Gracie. Go to Renzo's school on a Saturday and it is murderer's row, Roger, Ricardo Almeida, John Danaher. GSP was there for a while. These guys are from another planet. Top 10 guys in the UFC are not regular humans. Hell, your 5 and 5 pro will destroy pretty much anyone in a street fight. Backyard brawlers don't have a chance. Look at Kimbo Slice...he got destroyed against mediocre competition.

Chuck Lidel was an elite Division 1 wrestler....these are some of the best fighters on the planet. He did not come from a backyard program.

If a backyard brawler is any good he can train for free. If you are broke you can still train if you have potential. My son who is about to turn 15 just got offered a free slot at The Black Sheep camp in Austen.

The point is, you don't need money to excel in MMA, but you do need to train with good people. BJJ is expensive.....but that is not where your best fighters are coming from. They come from the plains of Oklahoma or the mountains of Dagastan. My favorite fighter right now if Zhang Weili. She is a bumpkin from the poor China countryside. She is also game as hell. They come from where people are hard, not soft like 99.9% of modern populations. You just need an iron will. Why do you think I value gameness so much? I get people who ask me all the time "how can I learn to fight." I say "wrestle in high school." Of course, wrestling is tough, tough, tough and most people break.

 

Very good point. The best fighters absolutely do not make the best instructors. For example, the assistant coach at my son's club wrestled D 2 and to my knowledge did not do that much. The head coach is a decorated D1 wrestler. He is a good instructor, but he assistant coach is phenomenal. He breaks things down INCREDIBLY well and explains things in a way that is easily grasped by all the kids and adults.

But as I mentioned, Lidel wrestled at Cal Poly...and extremely good program, def not a back yard.

 

Lidell definitely started his "pro" career doing strong man comps(fighting not lifting). You're right pulling. He also did vale tudo.

Masvedal started in the back yard. He fought along side Kimbo in Florida.

How about Derek Lewis, big country Nelson, Butterbean, and the countless other "30 lbs overweight" fighters who have flattened these physical specimen.
