    Arabian Stallion & Kids

Many say that stallions are not trustworthy around young kids. I beg to differ. :)

This is Raja, my Egyptian Arabian stud, with the 2 kids who live where I keep my horses. They LOVE this horse and he finds them quite amusing.

He's a grandson of Thee Minstril bred down through Thee Desparado I believe. I'll find his paperwork and let you know if I'm correct about Thee Desparado though & find the dam. ;)

I had a half brother to him who was a bay (also a Thee Minstril grandson). I know I've got some pics of him somewhere, too. :)

And he's only 14 hands if we stretch him. Those kids are 6 & 8 I believe.

    They are very purdy Mia!

My stallion is not aggressive, but would most likely think that little kiddos would be play toys! He thinks everything belongs in his mouth!

Very pretty horses . I was raised around both dogs and horses as well . Your statement reminds me of a lady i once knew who couldn't be dissuaded that her 2 gamebred dogs weren't always going to get along . Those time honored traditions are time honored for a reason . We had an old stud that was as broke to handle as a horse could be , then out of the clear blue he pinned the fairier between his front legs , collapsed on top of him and tried to breed the begeezus out of the guy . The fairier suffered a broken leg and a bruised ego . Hope your stud stays as gentle as he is , for the kids sake .

Aurora, Raja is 8 years old so he's still young & feisty. He definitely has his moments (for example, the new mare I just acquired finally went out of heat); I'm not denying that. But I can honestly say that he's the most laid back and curious stallion I've ever been around in my life. With that said, the kids know that they are NOT to be around him when an adult is not around. In fact, he's kept in a different pasture that remains locked unless 1 of us unlocks it. The kids are definitely well-behaved and know how to act around horses.

As for if he will stay that way, I've only seen them mellow with age. However, no one underestimates him and no one takes him, or any horse, for granted.

(Heck, yesterday morning he got into a fight with a 20-year-old Thoroughbred gelding who broke the latch on his stall door and got loose with Raja also loose in the barn. All hell broke loose and it took me a good while to get them apart & get the Thoroughbred stalled again. Both are ok with just a few bitemarks & a nice shoulder kick to the TB (thank goodness neither are shoed)

Just a ?. Is something going on with the forum or my PC. I can't view half the pics posted. But anyway, there's a lady up the road from me who raises Arabians and Quarter horses. She only has the best, her old man is a obgwn. Some of the most spirited yet gentle horses around. I go up once in a while and she will let me take one for a ride. He used to be my obgyn. She has these weekend sessions for kids so they can ride about twice a year. I love horses. My sister had a Appollussa ? and that was a stuborn horse.

    Great pics, MC! :D

I've got a camera full of up-the-nostril shots as well. I'm starting to wonder if curiosity killed the cat or the horse.

Raja definitely has his moments. I'm not sure if you can see the scar on his chest, but he bears several from fighting with another stallion when he was at my uncle's place and from fighting with a TB gelding where he's at now. It's those damn mares fault.

Some pics from a little over a year ago. Notice how much he still looked like a young colt. (& sorry about the quality, these were taken with a cheapo camera & then scanned in ;) )

Sometimes Photobucket takes a lunch break. I've noticed that, especially late at night.

    Re: Arabian Stallion & Kids

Funny, people say that about APBT's too! I have three kids under 9 and I take them out to a friends who has Arabians. Her stud is about 16 and has never acted up in his life. She also has three mares and he acts the gentleman around them also. I was raised around APBT's and horses, cows, emus and such. We would ride the horses to a sand pit to work them and take the dogs along for exercise. I had a problem with Bear(APBT) who acted great around horses until we tried to run. He would get right under a running horses chin and then try to jump up and grab it by the nose. It's a "catch" manuver he learned on cows. I have seen him do it to cows and when he got it right his weight tucked the cows head and cut it a flip. If he managed to keep his grip you could just go over and hogtie the cow. Horses, however can throw their heads a lot higher than a cow so he would miss and then get stomped and rolled and jump up and try it again. I had to put him in a halter and chain a 15" tire and rim to him to slow him down. How do your dogs and horses get on?

    Re: Arabian Stallion & Kids

My stallion got loose and went straight into my pasture full of mares, and my gelding. My gelding became a stallion and kid you not was trying to kill my stallion, while my stallion was zoned into one of the mares, and basically just trying to avoid bites and kicks while he went after the mare!! That day SUCKED, he was loose in a 6 acre pasture, and of course none of the horses wanted to stand still! Its a miracle he was caught with no major injuries.

And your boy is very handsome Mia, you breed him yet? My first foal is expected in April!! =)

    Re: Arabian Stallion & Kids

Crawfish, my dogs don't do horses. They (the dogs) see them as nothing more than large game. I don't trust my dogs one iota around the horses.

And MC, we have not bred him yet. I'm a little concerned about his head shaking issues and trying to determine if he'd pass that trait on or not. But we're going to wait and see and if all turns out to be allright, hopefully this year or the next he will be bred to my friends Bask mare who is an amazing athlete of a horse!

I can't wait to see some pics of your 1st foal! Heck, I never sent you the pics of Wish (our foal born last year).:o

    Re: Arabian Stallion & Kids

About the head shaking, does he chew on himself too? We had one that chewed his leg raw and I heard headshaking was a symtom. Just curious. I agree, if you don't trust the dogs, don't even go there! Our dogs used to roam free and were raised with livestock. Bear never bothered anything without being told to. Exept cats and a running horse with a rider. Guess he just got too exited. He would eat horse feed right out of the bucket with a horse. Or worse, right out of a steammy pile. Dogs can be sooo nasty sometimes! He loved horse feed though.
