Blue American Pit Bull Female Needs New Home

Discussion in 'Rescue & Adoption' started by cmvk87@yahoo.com, Jan 28, 2016.

  1. Hello,

I am at the unfortunate point in which I am trying to rehome my 2.5 year old blue American pit bull terrier. We are a military family and the challenges of moving constantly are resulting in our dog having a terrible behavioral issues. She is currently in regular training, but unfortunately I think the best chance for her is to be in a home that is stable.

    Weight: 65 lbs
    Age: 2.5 years old
    Spayed

    Background:

Our dog was acquired from a homeless girl in Phoenix, AZ. The homeless girl was given the dog by a random person in the park, and she could not keep the dog because her shelter did not allow pets. She was planning on taking the dog to the shelter, which in Phoenix was a sure death sentence, and so I took her. At this point she was approximately 6 months old. At the time, we were planning on staying in Phoenix and had a nice big backyard where she could play, but then not long after we decided to keep her, we were relocated to New York City. As soon as we found out we were moving, we amped up her training and tried to set a good foundation for her, and it did work: she knows basic commands, will sit and stay, and walks on leash very well. The issue that has arisen, however, is that she is dog reactive/dog selective. When she sees other dogs on the street, she loses it. We have her in training to address this issue, but it is having mixed results; she knows what to do, but if she can get away with reacting, she will. This is compounded by the fact that she cannot go to the dog park and we live in an urban area with lots of other dogs. I believe this is her entertainment because she is bored.

I say she is dog reactive/dog selective because we actually have an older dog as well, and she gets along super well with him. However, he is very laid back and is 9 years old, and he actually got mixed in with her in a dog tantrum and got hurt by accident. That being said, she would be best as an only dog with no other pets in the home. She definitely needs a place to run.

With people, she is great. She loves everyone, and is super floppy. I am biased, but I think she is one of the prettiest dogs I have ever known, and she loves a lot of action. She does have a tendency to jump up, and so small children are probably not a good choice, even though she does love kids.

    Current:

She has been in intensive dog training for 3 weeks now, and has shown improvement but will need regular training if she remains in an urban environment. The main reason we are attempting to rehome her is that being military, there is the possibility that we may be placed on a military base in the future (pit bull, German shepherd, rottweiler breeds banned) and the reality that she is not getting what she needs, which is an active purpose. My husband and I both work long hours, and she cannot go to the dog park to burn off energy. I love her so much, and for her sake I am trying to find a better environment for her, as she is so sweet and lovable.
