Given that most of us are now in shut down, I was wondering if anybody had read any descent books lately? I am going to re-read some of mine whilst I've got time on my hands!
I just dug out the following 3:-
The General by Paul Williams - This is about Martin cahill
In this Corner by Peter Heller - Brilliant boxing book
Canary Row by John Steinbeck - Great bunch of characters in this that I could relate to.
Any suggestions you have do not have to be Bull dog related books, although I did re-read the Armitage book last week, which has got to be one of the best dog books ever!

Chuvalo a fighting life by George Chuvalo...a boxing book but so much more Chuvalo one deep game individual Hard luck the Jerry Quarry story....cut from the same cloth as Chuvalo game to the end with a decent story to tell Cash by Johnny Cash...straight from the horses mouth so to speak Atlas by Teddy Atlas...again not just a boxing book a proper character with some hard earned life lessons to share Jimmy Tibbs sparring with life...a brilliant slice of British boxing history White line fever by Lemmy...the man could tell a story! i could go on lol...just a few that are good all round reads...Stedz i not read that cannery row book but me and the mrs spent a day/night in Monteray last year as part of our 30th wedding anniversary smart little town like the one outta jaws will have to give that a read...and yeah im bored as fuck and the sites only been shut down since last wednesday ffs!

It's been a while since I read a book all the way through, usually I have 2 or 3 lying around and read them a section at a time over a few weeks. James Leo Herlihy/s Midnight Cowboy, Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped and Treasure Island all classics.. Wilfred Owen or Siegfried Sassoon WW1 poetry, burns and my bible, also Scottish history, but the book I always return to when I need to lift my spirits is Johanna Spyri's Heidi.. I kept a copy for past 30 years, read it to my son now haha!

The Celebrated Captain Barclay by Peter Radford.

Barclay walked 1000 miles in 1000 consecutive hours (for a huge amount of money) and also trained Tom Cribb for his 2nd fight with Molineux, its a fascinating insight into the characters and sports at the time all set against the back drop of Britains war with France.

My old dad always told me "you only need to read 3 books in your life, if you read them properly, you will never go wrong!" I asked what 3 books he meant and he said the three B's! I asked what was the three B's and he told me the Bible, Burns and your Bank Book haha!

Thats a great read that...have you read Tolstoy's "half mad lord"? its about Lord Camelford the books kinda overlap each other...both contain either end of the story of Trusty the most famous game dog of that era bought by Camelford given to Jem Belcher and retired and lived his days out with Barclay...another good read from that era is Dan Donnelly by Patrick Myler which is a hell of a story...if i remember right i think it was the Englishman George Cooper (who Donnelly famously beat) who is said to of pioneered the scientific methods of conditioning and matching gamedogs to weight
