Just a random question... Do you guys think 2days apbt would be considered more bull or terrier. I know alot of people who call their animals bulldogs but seem 2 foget what the terrier brought to the mix.... (Please don't turn this into a bashing thread). :)

Well I think they are more bulldog but definitely a nice percentage of terrier in there as well... The terrier is more apparent in sum yards I have seen.... How bout you??

What you have to remember was that any dog that worked at any baiting sport was called bulldog. And that dogfighting was established long before bullbaiting was ever banned and many strain's were already established before 1835 when bullbaiting was banned.

What terrier blood was added was probably only very minor since terrier's are nowhere game enough for the box. And it would have been a very rare dog that proved itself game enough to be bred from.

I would have 2 disagree with the terriers not being game enough. Most terriers are known and bred for gameness 2day. I mean the real working terriers that get the shit tore out of em by larger animals like badgers and foxes ect.... That's one of the main reasons it was even crosses into the "bulldogs". Otherwise if they were perfect there would have been no need for the cross or even had the terrier part added into the name 2 begin with.

l agree with both, but you also see some body shapes that some apbt's have and they just dont fit the bull l also think they act more terrier like. jmo

l always thought that the only amimals bred for gameness is the gamedog and game rooster till this day.

Yeah exactly... That's because like unite said there was no one "bulldog" breed involved in the cration of our breed or terrier. Hell it wasn't even an exact blue print of what persentage of what was added to the mixture. Hell the apbt is one of the only breeds with no clear standard as far as looks or physical appearance. Hell I honestly think some lines are so different from others they can be considered their own breed of dog..lol. And that wouldn't be far off from how the breed was created in the first place. Right??

At the root of it, a terrier's function is to work quarry in the ground; which is a job an apbt is uncapable of doing due to it's size. A bulldog's function is to bite and hold. A job the apbt is perfectly suited for. So, evidently they're more bulldog from a function/working standpoint.

ya true. But what were they going into the ground for??? Not earth worms..lol.. They were used to hunt and drive out larger game than themselves. Animals with their own set of teeth and claws. Terriers aint no pushovers some people seem 2 4get that those dogs are sum of the tuffest most energetic and durible dogs you can find. Also smart as hell too. I think that's is what they truly bring to the apbt..

What I was thinkin as I just skimmed through the history of apbt is that true dogmen and women never strayed away from breeding that bull n terrier "type" dog.

It's the % of both bull and terrier that we will never know.

"types" of dog is really what it's all about. "breeds" are for conformation showing.

Historically all dogs had a working purpose and were divided into "types". Zero attention was paid to appearance. Around the Victorian era dog conformation shows became popular, and "breeds" were born.
Gotta go, ultimate fighter is on
