just curious which do you prefer?i personally use a chain and not the cheap pet store ones..one of my dogs tend to cut rope in one bite..so for me chain is safer.:)

use horse leads..they get the job done and dont personify a tough guy image. Using similar to what' attached....

chain...but i live out in the country, horse lead if i go out to town or something...

  5. I prefer and use chain. Why? if the dog is doing something wrong (pulling the wrong way, getting in my walk path, pulling on lead, etc), I only have to sort of whip him (not hard) enough to get him back on track.

A humaniac asks: How do you "whip" him? Well, try to picture this. I am walking holding the end of the chain leash, he does something wrong (refer to above examples), I use the middle of the chain (one end linked to the collar other in my hand) to smack him on the side of his body. It doesn't hurt them but it will "wake them up" sort of speak. Also, a chain helps you pull him back if there is a need.

Rope lead, because I can get one in 20'+ if I wanted to, and probably longer. They are comfortable on the hands, look great, and will NOT break! I have seen plenty of chain leads break. All it takes is for that one link to bend a little, or snap for the dog to be gone.

I think both have pros and cons. chain, giving wrong impression to people not used to the breed, but is liked because of the strength. horse lead, IMO is the best, simply because it is not heavy and therefore you can use longer lengths without the extra weight chain adds. I made my horse lead at home in about 5 minutes and the cost was minimal. And you can find all the materials at your local hardware store. and if your dog chews the lead well then you have a problem that can be fixed by training your dog that simple. correct me if i am wrong but i dont think that a pit bull or any dog for that matter can break it, unless its old and has been sitting in the rain.

i am useing a flat 1" nylon lead for mine. it works good for me he chews on it and gos crasy at first but i snap it once or twice and he's good for a while. also if he starts geting out of hand and not doing what i say i take the end and pop him with it to get he's attention like others had said. will i need to step up to the round lead when he is a little older?

I don't like chain leads for various reasons. I use a horse lead for heavy duty walking and exercise. Leather or nylon lead for training. (Not that I would recommend leather or nylon for a chronic puller.)

i buy horse leads and shorten then to 4 feet. i put a knot in the middle for an extra grip just in case. they look best, and like 14rock said they are most comfortable.

grabing chain to pull your fired dog back can do a number on your hands.

I use 5/8 rope lead and make the leash myself. I have a custom one that is 15 ft long for when we do drag weights.

i like the black horse leads you can buy from home depot for 1 and change per foot i got 20 feet with handles tied every so far so i can decide how long i want to let him out.

why 20'? i thoyght that to keep you as the leader and the dominant one the dog should be right by your side with you slightly a head? dose that give the dog mixed mesages? i thought that 4' was to long. was i ever wrong LOL !

Depends on what you want it for. I bought a 20' lead for taking my dog out to the local fishing hole so I could tie him to a tree and let him have some room to sniff around. Longer leads are also nice for exercising because you can stand in one place and let the dog run around you. (Great for lazy folk like me.)

I like a long lead for walking through corn fields (not during planting season)....enough room for the dog to run, but you are still in immediate control if need be.

ive had bad experieces with the store bought chains also..the kind you get at walmart or petco..because of the cheap leather handles they come with...i just wanted to put this out there.so people that walk there puppies on lite weight chains and leashs..need to know..when there dog get about 6 months old its time to up grade..personally as far as image go`s ..i would rather people see my dog on a chain...than off the chain...
