for me it all depends on the dog...i have a bitch that will chew through any kind of nylon in half a second...so i have to use a chain for her...but all the others i prefer to use a horse lead.

simply put.......chains are non-chewable and every pit I had liked to chew

tried using rope leads but they kept chewing them and it made sense to me why walk them using the same material they play tug with.

  4. if your in a keep use a long horse lead. i would prefer

  5. I use a 6 foot leather lead that also has a short walking handle on it. It works great and I have the extra control if needed with the handle.

I use 6.5 foot long alpine rope as a lead. And I never had any problems with it. Other good leads I used to have were made of car seat belt.

Horse leads. And when properly stored away, then the dog is unable to chew on them. They are NOT chew toys & it's not the dog's fault if he chews through it. And I've never seen a dog chew through a thick horse lead while out on a daily stroll.

As for chains, they do break. They are NOT foolproof like people are led to believe & I believe are used solely for fashion reasons (they go great with spiked collars [IMG]). And don't get me started on those people who use the 4 ft. giganticly thick linked brass/gold chain leads....they only say 1 thing & it's not "I care about my dog".

i dont use chains that big.....its somethin smaller than the chains i use to tie out my dogs...and those arnt thick at all.

I don't use chains at all, to heavy & bulky. I have them trained to walk along side of me. But, if I go in town for dog bones, a regular collar & leash works.

I prefer the rope horse lead. They are inexpensive, a good length, and last forever.

What I dont understand what everyone is using chains to take there dog walking. I just by the good quality 6-10 feet leash or lead at most any pet store and I have never had one dog ever escape while I was handwalking him on a leash in my 30+ years with the dogs. Remember when walking the dog on a lead you are the one in control and not the other way around.

Is it a bad thing that i often walk Asia without a lead attached? She will generally walk next to me without wandering off. She is interested in our surroundings, but she will come if i call and she isn't aggressive towards other animals.

Never trust an APBT not to fight, she may turn on one day and not listen, I would not take the chance ;)

Besides being a major liability, it is usually against the law to walk without a lead also. Marty said it, never trust a pitbull not to fight. Even if she never turns on and takes off after an animal, she could be hit by a car, shot, etc. Never walk, any dog without a lead, no matter how well behaved it is ;)

This is kinda OT on the OT. My neighbor has a (3-month-old maybe?) Pit Bull puppy that he's walking around off-lead. What is it about some people that they get a new puppy and immediately put that puppy down in public and expect it to learn to heel off-lead? My girl is 2 years old and I still wont take that plunge. Off-lead heeling in competition or practice in limited distractions? Sure. Off-lead heeling with a baby or haphazardly-trained dog in an uncontrolled environment? Just because I'm an APBT owner doesn't mean I'm totally gone in the head.

I to use a good horse lead. It's alot more comfortable to the hand. I put it up when not being used or he would chew on it also.

I use a regular leash with a harness. I used to buy the chains with the leather handles, but the handles would either tear in half or completly break off the chain.

I'm a little strange about my leads.

First of all I make them all out of 5/8" Polypropylene Rope or 3/4" nylon. Unless I've made it - I don't trust it. Petey just broke a brand new leash from Pet Smart and went visiting our neighbors. I had to pick the dumb dog up two streets over and he wanted to stay with the older ladies for cookies because it was bridge night.

My favorite leash is one that I designed: 4 ft long, double thickness 3/4" nylon lead with a bully snap clip. The leash is shaped like a Y with one arm being longer than the other.

THe short arm of the Y clips on to the prong or choke collar, and the second/longer arm can be either cliped to the flat/security collar or there is a D-ring sewn into the nylon about 2" above the leash clip. When you clip onto the D-ring, you now have a traffic strap.

I put matching/complenting colored tubular nylon on both leash handles. I love this leash - especially when working with Birdie in public.

i use the double sided nylon one that i purchased at petco and a nylon harness. i dont ever leave the harness on him unattended cuz he will find a way to chew it up
