Curious about Canidae

Here's where my curiosity comes from. Down here, Canidae sells for approx. $28 per 40 lb bag. I'm honestly just trying to figure out how such a "great" and "fabulous" quality food can afford to sell it for cheaper than many of the crap foods out there. Yet other quality foods start in the upper $30 or lower $40 range....and that's for 35 lb bags & 30 lb bags.

I guess I've just been trying to figure out all along how they manage to get all their top-of-the-line quality ingredients so much cheaper than other brands and manage to sell their product so much cheaper.

Don't get me wrong as I'm not saying it's a bad food. I have seen some dogs look great on it. Butt then again, a vet assistant at the clinic feeds her show Boxers Kibbles-N-Bits and those dogs have the nicest muscle tone & shiniest coats I've ever seen on Boxers. I'm just stating my personal experience with it and that I do not like the food.

My question is concerning the claims that it's the best food on the market yet it's price is lower than "crap" foods like Nutro, Pro-Plan (it's the equivalent of Purina One), etc.

You are getting a good deal.Where i'm at it cost me 39$ for a 40lb bag. I have been feeding it for about 3 years with good results but know people that did not get the same results and switched.

    supply and demand?

in my area, when i started feeding it...probably close to a year ago, it was 39 bucks for a 38.5 lb bag +tax here. About six months ago, the store started carrying 40 lb. bags. the price also dropped to 34 bucks + tax. sales tax is only 6.75% so it's not that bad.

i'll continue to fork out whatever it costs until the price goes down. hopefully it gets a scheap as it is in you area

i am more than pleased with the results, and will feed it until i no longer have dogs. (unless they give me a reason otherwise).

considered trying TW, but it is effin expensive here.

here's a thread about "grading" dog food -

    http://www.game-dog.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25767&highlight=grade+food

and i called canidae. the opd (overall pepcin digestibility) is like 89.9%. i called diamond, as i used to feed diamond naturals [supposed to be one of their better products], and the opd was only 71%. call your dog food producer, ask that ? and see how long it takes them to get you to their R&D department for an answer.

i've been told THAT should be your number one concern in your feed. i've since done some research and agree with this, to an extent. you'd be suprised how good some "generic" foods might be for your dog. i won't gamble with it, and will use a consistent quality product. i'm as concerned with the ingredients, and won't try using something with more fillers.

I don't know, but Canidae sells for $35 - $40 a bag where I'm at, atm.. doesn't seem to be as good as it used to be for me.. thinking of switching to something else.. my dogs have gas that could of cleared Saddam from his hideout.. really don't know what to switch to.. the only "high-end food" I have access to is Canidae.. and that's still an hour and a half trip for me..

Wow. I didn't know y'all paid that much for it. It started off at $34 per 40 lb bag a few years ago, but the price dropped to the $28 per bag about a year ago.

Are you sure that price is for the 40 lb bag? I have payed $25-$26 for a 20 lb bag and I pay $35 for a 40 lb bag here.

100% positive. I used the food for almost 8 months before finally giving up and switching. By then my dogs looked awful.

If you go to the Canidae website, it will give you a list of resellers in your area. ;)

Canidae here retails for $34. Pitpalace, if you're near Tulsa, Southern Agriculture carries the good foods.

$33 per 40lb bag up her in PA, atleast from the place i get it from. Its all about the stores profit, they mark it up as they see fit to make a buck

I ran to buy more just yesterday from my local supplier. They must be psychic knowing I was growing tired of paying $4 more a bag from them, than driving somewhere else. As of yesterday, the price was $29 and change, per 40 lb. bag.

I do not know how they do it, but it works for me. The ingredients are top-notch, and there are only a handful of feeds I've tried that have worked as well, or better.

That short list would contain only:

Timberwolf (fantastic food, but for the price, it's just not worth it, feeding a number)
    &
DVP Natural Balance- similar quality, similar results. Didn't like it quite so much, but it was still a very decent food. More expensive. Recalls turned me off this food, coupled with the price, and that you purchase it at petco/petsmart which I don't like shopping at.

How they do it, I don't know. The price fluctuations, show to me, it's not such a large company, that a price is regulated. What they sell it for, and many stores, is a bargain. The stores charging 40 dollars a bag, although still a deal, is unfair. I've always assumed the reason they are able to do it, is that they are a smaller business, with less worthless employees on the payroll, and (for the most part) lack of advertising. They do show a few commercials on their site, but I've never seen one played, heard them on the radio, seen a flyer/billboard. The fact they are able to produce such a quality food, and continue acquiring customers by word of mouth, proves they don't have to spend billions on advertising.

Or perhaps they have a cloning device, and have only bought one quality cow/chicken/lamb.

Either way, I'm glad they've got it right.

Its $34 for 40# here in AL. Every now and then they run a Buy one get one free sale here. Compared to other foods, I seem to feed about half as much and get better results, so price to me is about the same as lower grade foods you have to feed more of.

I did feed a few of my dogs the new Diamond naturals, and they did good on it.

I would say supply/demand AND the cost of overhead all factor into it. no middleman, etc, would obviously lessen prices.

here, a 16.52 lb bag runs about $20+
and my feeling is, if your dogs are doing great on Pedigree, Kibbles N' Bits, etc., then go for it~whatever works. every dog has a different "make up" and different dogs do good/bad on different foods. what works for one may be bad for another... trial and error

you are getting a great deal. you are basically getting it at the cost the store gets it for. just with a couple dollars added on.

the store i work for we pay

    canidea original - 40lbs $25.42 retail - 34.99
    Canidea lamb&Rice - 40lbs $26.31 retail 37.99
    Canidea chicken- 30lb $19.42 retail 27.99

we actaully have good retail prices compared to the other stores around us in Los Angeles

Canidae is $32 per 40 lb. bag out here. I started feeding it 11 weeks ago and the mutt is JUST now having firm stool. I've been thinking of switching for the last week but with her medical issues (epilepsy), I'd rather not... so I'm glad she finally adjusted to it.

  18. Canidae up in Sw PA is around 48.99+ tax for almost a 40lb bag.....
