Hello everyone. I just recently moved into a house in the country in Ohio, the person renting it to me is my boss. He found out that I have two APBT's and asked me if I had insurance and that it was the law, he also found out that the insurance co. for the farm will not insure the place if these dogs are here un-insured. My wife called local insurance co's. and none of them would insure the dogs. Can anyone help me with this. These dogs are not registered. They are very nice dogs, I have taken excellent care of my male that I've had for 2 yrs. I don't wanna have to get rid of them. Thanks

Alot of people have said State Farm Insurance Co has no breed specific policies against dogs. Only against individual dogs proven vicious.
    Good Luck.

Here in Spain we have BSL that forces all owners of certain breeds (dogs potentially dangerous) to have a dog insurance, license and few other papers.

Im all against this law but even if this get removed someday, i would still get my dog insurance, it covers up to 300k euros on third party damage and few vet bills incase of disease, accident or if the dog gets stolen or lost, the range of this bill here in spain is from 30E to 150E depending on the more you want it to cover your dog.

I got a medium one around 70$/year and next year when my dog hits 18 months will get the expensive one just in case he suffers some injury on WP or other sport i plan to do with him, have insurance to cover part or total of vet bill.

Not sure how's on USA but here, for any breed i would recommend pay a medium insurance for the benefits incase something bad happens.

i have heard that as well about State Farm, tho i THINK it is dependant upon individual agents...

here are some tips to help you in your search:

    Tips on Finding Homeowners' Insurance

    • Shop around. Ask your dog-owning friends which company they use and if they have had problems. Your dog's national breed club may also have suggestions.
    • Contact the insurance commissioner in your state. The phone number can also be found in the state government section of the blue pages of your phone book. The commissioner can provide you with a list of all insurance companies doing business in your state. Work your way down the list to find out who can provide you with coverage that best suits your needs. When you speak to the commissioner, share your frustration over companies' discriminatory practices. Specifically ask him or her to review a cancellation or refusal to renew your policy. Existing law may already prohibit insurance companies from discriminating by breed, particularly if you live in Pennsylvania or Michigan.

    • Agents within the same company may have different policies. Talk to more than one representative for a particular carrier before giving up.
    • Show that the dog has completed some type of obedience training program, such as AKC's Canine Good Citizen program.
    • Contact your state senator or representative. Discuss your insurance problems and suggest that he or she introduce legislation prohibiting insurance companies from discriminating against homeowners based on the breed of dog they own. The Canine Legislation department (doglaw@akc.org) has materials to assist you in these efforts.
    • As a last resort, consider buying a separate liability policy or separate rider to your existing policy that is specifically directed towards your dogs.
    dug this up, maybe it'll help: <TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=4 width="95%" border=0><TBODY><TR bgColor=#f7f7f7><TD vAlign=top width="18%">[font=Verdana, Arial]From:Huber Heights, OH

</TD><TD>[font=Verdana, Arial]<HR>State Farm declined coverage of my pit bull, but allowed me to keep my homeowners insurance thru them. I got $100,000 liability insurance for $485 (6 month premium) or 647.00 (1 yr premium). Of course I did ask for a $10,000 deductable (lower premium cost) because I am sure my dog will not bite anyone. Good luck and love your dog!!!!
