yeah. territorial, jealous, attention, trained, genetic, accidental, excite, fear, protective, drive.to name a few.then you got them little fuggers who act all happy and sweet. just thinking about biting you is making them happy lol. i think zebo was like that. which explains how he got that kid.

I think that sums it up! I tell yah that Zebo accident was A wake up call to all of us!! My kids grew up around dogs, I got the YOUNG pups youse to my kids and my kids to them. I put my young dogs on the rub table and watch TV talk to them, give them some one on one time and I've been lucky! Now there are A few over the years I just didn't trust I let everybody know you might want to watch him! I had A friend who raised squirrel dogs, those little fiest were the most sneaky little dogs I've ever been around! No such thing as Always and never!

Most of those dog breeds started as herding dogs then moved to the "ppl herding." I bet there have always been manbiters in the APBT breed! Yes, they should be easy to handle for aftercare. That don't mean straight puss. I read Honeybunch got a hold of a thumb or hand in one of her matches. Guy had to tell em and they got her off. Don't you think she knew she had a HAND in her mouth? Some dogs throw tantrums to get loose like Trot said. That is a manbiter, just not severe. If a dog will bite THE HAND THAT FED HIM to get loose, what would he do to somebody he didn't like? There ARE levels to it. Some folks are willing to accept more than others. I wouldn't put down any great performing "manbiter" unless I couldn't control him AT ALL! My daughter isn't allowed to play with any of "her puppies," dogs, w/out supervision. I hate that Zebo bit that kid but it wasn't the dogs fault. They knew what they had on that chain

This is the extract from the Mountain man interview I posted with just the parts that refer to man biter.

“Old Ranger, I don*t know how many HE won country style, but he whipped everything we ever put on him. That son of a $#@! would attack me, if I didn*t do what he wanted. I remember one time I had him on a twenty foot chain out behind the barn, I approached him and noticed as I came up he had a wild look in his eyes. I wasn*t really sure if he intended to be friendly or bite me, but as I got close he came at me wide open, and I saw he was going right for my face. At the last minute, I turned away. Evelyn had gotten me a new winter coat for Christmas and Ranger hit the collar of the coat and tore a big strip about five inches wide down the back. He had it on the ground shakin* it for all he was worth.”

His wife makes a fist and imitates hitting someone with a right hook. “When Ranger lunged at him a second time Lester hit him like this, and that dog*s eyes rolled back, his tongue fell out of his mouth and he fell flat.”

“I knocked him out cold and thought I*d killed him. When he came to he was just as friendly as a puppy. I believe that dog had flashbacks or something. Most of the time he*d love me to death, but every now and then he*d look at me like who the hell are you?! One time I was coming along with the feed bucket, back then those five gallon pails were metal not plastic, and he went after me again. I swung that bucket and hit him over the head so hard I thought I*d killed him, knocked him out cold-AGAIN. He woke up and acted like nothing ever happened.

Mrs. Hughes added, “You could never turn your back on Ranger, at least I never did. You never really knew what was going on in his head.”
Up to this point Mr. Hughes had been smiling and chuckling as he reminisced about Duke and Ranger, but now he turned serious again. “I didn*t used to see much danger in one that was vicious, I knew a Bulldog could hurt a man but I don*t think I realized how bad, I wasn*t afraid of one. Now I*m a lot more wary of a maneater, they really can hurt you, even kill you. I honestly don*t believe that a grown man could get a sixty-five pound Bulldog off without a weapon, if it decided to attack him.

The very first time I saw Zebo, he bit me” Mr. Hughes began. “Me and William Cable had come to Lonzo*s house to look at his dogs. Lonzo had his dogs tied along a narrow path, and if you got one step the wrong way, they could reach you. I started walking along the path behind Lonzo towards the dogs and stopped and asked him if any of the dogs could get to us. “No, and they wouldn*t bite you no how” he answered, and we kept walking. We went a few steps further and a black dog hit the end of his chain and grabbed me by the arm. I swung my fist and punched him in the jaw, knocking him off, and that was the very first time I laid eyes on Zebo.

I was eating breakfast the next morning and looked out the window to see Dave Adams* car pull into the yard, he*d come for Zebo. He wanted to get Zebo off the chain himself, a few moments later I saw him running away from Zebo*s spot. Zebo had almost bit him and ran him off. I had to load Zebo in their car myself. They hadn*t brought a box or crate with them, and when they left Zebo was riding in the front seat between them, looking out the window. I was wondering if by the time they got to Ohio either of them would have any face left!”

After that was when Dave Adams* son got hurt, and Zebo did bite that boy. I saw his face and Zebo bit him pretty good and he sold Zebo to a feller named Johnson.

Zebo would bite, he*d bite you or he*d bite a stranger. Not every time mind you, there*d be times he was just as friendly as a puppy. But if you walked up to him and his eyes got real wide and round, the only way to keep from getting bit was to get the hell away from him fast! When he bit, he didn*t just chomp and turn the hold loose. He*d work it like he was on a dog, hold and shake.

One time some big ol* boy from South Carolina was here to look at the dogs with some friends. I guess he weighed about two hundred and fifty pounds; big, all muscle, you know? We started to look at the Bulldogs, and he went right towards Zebo. Back then we had him chained out there by the old apple tree. I called after him, “Don*t touch that dog, he*ll bite you!” He answered, “I train dogs for a living, and there aint a dog in the world that I can*t pet.” And I told him; well, you can*t pet THAT one. He looked at Zebo and said “this little dog is friendly, look at the way his tail*s a waggin*!” I said; he*s just anticipatin* how good he*s gonna enjoy biting you!

Me and the other fellers walked up the hill towards the other dogs, and we didn*t get but about ten feet before I heard that boy scream. He was holding his arm up and there was Zebo hanging from it, shaking. I had to get a breaking stick to get him off, I don*t believe there was any way that boy, big as he was, could*ve got Zebo off and eventually Zebo would have gotten him down.”

i think breeder skip the manbitting culling because its less work for them , selling puppies instead of improving the litter .

Sure there are degrees like with any other term used in these dogs.

    Could be leary of strangers,
Could be h/a only in certian situations,
Could be an all out man eater that will hit anything that moves. Etc. There are more but you get the idea

All of them get buried here except the first one. I don't care how good the dog is or how well they produce. Some are willing to tolerate it others have zero tolerance for it.

Done then leary of strangers is the cut off. We are too quick to fall in love with dazzle of a beautiful women, a ace, a manbiter whatever the case maybe just to watch the whole thing come apart it might take some time but it will surface. The surge of owning these defects are so great morals are weakened and for some you might be holding a lottery ticket so we sucumg to the all mighty dollar how ever you want to cut this pie on these traits its poision in the long run or immediate. I think colby lost a grandson to a dog the kid was 5 or somthing and he covered it up. When your up there its damn hard to go back to the drawing board. When I got the dog of my dreams and had to put him down at 2 I wont lie I cried like a woman and my wife rubbed head. There is pain in this breed but you dig deeper, get smarter and hopefully meet solid people cause thats where the solid bulldogs are. We had a whole thread on manbiters i started and EP knew a line of dogs thwere real deal down in Mexico that were living with families and roaming the street(maybe not to that extent). EP if you read this can you post some peds if you remember which line of dogs they were.

Colby lost a 2 year old Nephew according to the article I posted. I think if that happened to me I would probably be done with keeping dogs full stop. I'm sure he was cut up about it but it didn't get in the way of him breeding dogs for the rest of his life.

Exactly. I'll keep all but the last. My dog ain't gotta like you OR your dog! As long as he know who the boss is. Boss lady earns her respect on her own. She ain't afraid to take her respect either.

Good post jacob,,, i dont recall what you were talkig about right now...

    ONLINE PEDIGREES :: [140119] :: CANE VALLEY'S KOCKY MIKE
shoud be culled as he likes to taste humans on the wash in,,, cvk never worked a dog and when h finally did,,, he couldnt control it and curred himself when the dog was shaking up my partner...

    ONLINE PEDIGREES :: [215040] :: TGK'S JUNIOR
if juniors a real winner with his brothers name,,, he should be culled as well as he bit the man in the face that was washing him...
If juniors the real junior thats not a winner,,, hes still a brother to a manbitter...

If you dont want to end up like d adams,,, cull your manbitters...
If you want to gamble on them biting,,, you better also gamble on both you and your cur getting the bullit...
I dont think they should cull the dogs as much as the men that allow it,,, and I dont think theres no room in the box for a manbiter...
Like someone said about something eles,,, its seems to be going backwards from where these fine bulldogs have evolved...

In the early part of the century,,, Mr.JP.Colby let some of the dogs roam the town and one got ahold of his very young niece or nephew and killed em...
Mr.Colby had a lifelong obssession to cull maneaters and the colby line was later to be known as the most well rounded docile bulldogs to be found...

I relate the later colby dogs that become more white the best of this selective breeding and the most removed away from some of those mean black dogs...
Alot of these manbiters and destructive bulldogs also tend to be black or darker color,,, I relate them to the old henry dogs that might have stemmed from some mollaser dogs of war that were intended to take down humans...
The white also reflects the exctinct white terrier that as all terriers were close to man being handeled etccc...
This history behind the terriers is more hands on than those of the dark dogs of war,,, whom were probably one person dogs...
I know manbiters come in all colors but also understand enough history to know it goes deeper...

Honestly I like all sound bulldogs and black is my favorite color but ive noticed the two man eaters I had were black with those creepy gold eyes and both lokked similar to the zebo dog...

I think there is something into studing colors...

The black lines tend to bite more,,, be more agressive or shy and have alot rough curs,,,
but also alot of the freaks are black also...Zebo,,,bullyson,,, shadey lady,,, general etc....

I also dont think there are many white freaks,,, with tudors white rock being the only exception Ive found so far...

The dogs of war were a bit bigger and very athletic as they would run with the horsemen from town to town killing shit...
In all the studies Ive done on these dogs of war from the romans to the britts,,, I never seen anything white as all semmed black,,, brindle and dark red...
I do relate that destructiveness Tudor was looking for in the henry type,,,might be throwbacks from these dogs of war...

Its not as simple as black is bad and white is good as some sepratists might think...
Bad to me is great to Earl,,, so its a matter of what we want in our bulldogs...

Some think the black color is stronger genes and that holds some value also,,, I know of a very knowledable dog man and pigeon racer that culls his pups a very similar way that he culls his pegeons by the pupil in the eye,,, this man only kept pups that had solid black mouthes,,, the roof of the mouth and gums had to be black or he would let them go... His standards and values are his and I respect him for that,,, heres a ped of his line...

i find that bull terriers are far worst than any of the other bull and terrier breeds. even bostons. they're stupid so if you confuse or startle them expect to be bit. some are just bite crazy. they like who feeds them, nothing else.

Good observation,,, I think there is also a white fault that dogs like dalmations,,, english bull terriers and some jacks ruusels suffer from,,, limited genes and bred too tight...

Its so funny rereading all these articles of old that talk about old timers not tolerating manbiters, YET some of them did not PUT DOWN that man biter themselves, instead that man biter was just passed down to another person, which just goes to show yawl some of the old timers DID TOLERATE a man biter especially if he was a great/gifted bulldog. The same way some manbiters are tolerated today.
