While Cuba was very much a cold war east vs. west thing, Russia has a lot more of a commercial interest in Syria. Money (read 'oil') can (and has in the past) tipped the scales.

Also, the bomb was still fresh in everyone's mind in the 50's and the resulting paranoia was a huge factor in the Cuba crisis.

 

There be a-lot off huffing+puffing from them...but they won't go to war for any other country...jus won't see it happen..........but who knows____________
