Just curious out there on what some of your opionions are about Going Light Barney. I have read several accounts & spoken to several people who though he was a champ, but that agreed that he might have been too smart or to picky to do what was asked of him at all times. However, I have also read accounts that just write him off as a do nothing dog. I would love some insight into this dog.

If I remember right Going Light Barney was R. Strattons dog, so he may have a slightly biased view on the dog and the line that he helped create.

Richard Stratton never owned Going Light Barney. Here is a good article by Stratton if the link works.

edited to add: I just tried the link and it did not work but may if you type it in. Going Light Barney was bred by Larry McCaw out of a pure Corvino dog named Rootberg's Booger and a bitch strong in the blood of Rascal and Johnstons Goofy.

Stratton says he never even saw Barney in action.

Stratton wrote that Barney was campaigned around the same time as Boomerang and was over shadowed by him and other great dogs of the time. He also says that Barney came from behind in several of his matches. Barney was a 7XW- 1XL according to Stratton and won after he lost. All in all he was a credible BULLDOG. IMO

thanks for all the info. i have a grandson (Pops is how he's known as he's one of my older dogs) & two great grandaughters off Barney-they are pretty tightly bred. what got me recently, was that one of the great grandaughters was a blatant throughback to Barney not only in terms of structure & build but also in coloring & overall looks. she stands out in her litter. i can also proudly say that these 3 dogs are honest bulldogs with great drive.

just been reading about the dog, it seems he showed gameness several times but quit cold in 16 minutes when matched in his 3rd, some top dogmen said there must have been something wrong with him as he was just too good a dog for this to happen, others reckoned it was down to the blistering heat that day.
anyhow here is the partial record i found.
beat metcalfs 2 dollar george in 35
    beat cutchins butch in 28
lost to browns pistol in 16
    beat robinson tuffy in 1.06
    beat williams chubby in 19
beat petris red pepper in 40
beat griegos little joe in 1.27

he fought between 39 and 45lbs

Barney by all accounts was a top notch match dog. He won at the same show maloney's Davis lost. I will dig back in my old mags for more info.

Correction Davis won at the show I mentioned earlier.

Barney traveled from San Diego to new mexico. Two ear dogs meet, Barney the old pro only puts out enough to stay out of trouble. Joe gets a front leg and Barney goes for a stifle. Back to ears. Barney on top pacing himself. Barney appears to be the stronger dog but Joe is doing some hardbiting. 45 mins Joe comes up and puts Barney down. At one hour seven mins Barney dragging Joe with a ear hold. At one twenty-two the same. This has been one hell of fight, neither dog has made a turn. One twenty-five Barney all the way working stifle, frontlegs and stifle. One thirty-seven Joe down and singing. Joe handler gives it up. Six wins and one loss for Barney. The hard biting little
Joe just could not get past the class and experience of Barney.

They swear up and down he was rubbed. Said he never looked right from the time they hit. Who really knows but I can't see a dog that has went over an hour quit in 16 min without getting seriously hurt. Something fishy went on that night!

According to S/Sykes,booger was not a corvino bred dog.Joe put the false ped. on him .he also stated that rootberg was a millioniare that like the dogs.

Damn right it did. Many said GLB's Owner was an Ass Clown, but that does not justify cheating the Dog. Also, it was said that GLB was viewed as Legend in the making, but his record was marred because of his owner.

    GOING LIGHT BARNEY.....GRCH!
