When walking your bulldog, do you all let it pull you or spend the time teaching it to walk behaved by your side without pulling? Is it a hard task to get natural pullers not to pull?

Lol. I know what you mean. In the past I've had no problems with pullers. But I'd like my wife to at least be able to walk this next one I'm getting. And maybe the kids too when I'm around supervising. Thanks for the heads up. I'll do a search.

I always let them pull when were out in the trails, its almost like a prey drive. however its like they have a different demeanor when were on the city streets, they just walk next to me.

Did they learn that on their own? Or did you have to give some coaching?

i personally refuse to let any animal pull me around...its not a sign of gameness but of dominance the pack leader leads the way...... it takes training and they walk very close to my right side at all times if you let a dog pull u all over the planet ur retarded the end

I agree, however I feel like when I am doing my 2 hour handwalks out on trails during conditioning it is much better excercise for the dogs to pull than just walking besides me so I allow it. However I dictate what manner we walk in when we are doing road work or at the park, It is almost like they are next to me looking into my face for approval? Weird, and yes Steeldog it is like it came about naturally, I do mainly walk in rural trails, so maybe they are just confused going down the street?

Either way I appreciate everyone that walks their dogs the natural way! No mills here, still gettin' ribbons.

Pulling is not a sign of dominance as the "experts" wish you to believe. Not in every breed.
Years ago I owned a sled dog, and you always want a sled dog to be pulling.
Same with APBT's to be showed or compete in weight pulls. Pulling while walking is among the most basic and effective means
to develop strength. And if my dog stops when I tell him, I know who the master is.
I encourage him to pull, keep him focused, "What's that," pointing my finger.
Good workout for the both of us.

No, pulling is not a sign of gameness. Even cur dogs in the APBT family pull.
However, they can be trained to pull with harness, and not pull with collar, it just takes patience for natural pullers.
But, if a strange dog is seen, usually the dog will forget all its learned...and the pulling just gets harder.

I have recently discovered that my 9 year old will let me use his razor scooter, and my dogs can runn with my lil arse. They have bursts and go a mile or better. I use to hand walk, which kept my arms fit, no problem doing it, but I have been short on tim lately and this new activity seems fun for them, I actually have them trained to turn as we were when we would hand walk, *routine* is a good thing with dogs!
You may want to teach them to walk with a chocker, first, than move to a harness. I have had much success with this in the past. Teaches them who is boss, but no matter what when you get them in a harness, they straight ready to go go go......atleast me blue hippo is. He is only 1 and ball of energy. After 2 trips with him I decided its too early.
I did not wear him, as I was actually walking most of the time as I jumped off the razor, cause he is too damn fast.....lol, he needs more time walking and has never seen a chocker.

I am talking about training the lungs, though. Weiht pull shows strength, not really endourance. I have seen some lazy ass dogs, pull more than a TON, and sit on a couch all day.

I once tried something like that with my sons skateboard, and found myself going at speeds I don't wish to go anymore, :)
It was like my dog was racing someone I couldn't see...
I had to jump off and catch the pace to stop him before reaching corner...
Too old for that now I guess.

Handwalking is the most important part of conditioning your dog. When I walk my dog on the trail I let them go out in front on a 10ft.lead.When I walk down the road /sidewalk they walk next to me.I don't let a dog pull me all over the place. When u are walking the dog or dogs (every dog is different) you learn about them. How hard they pull, endurance, etc.

roadwork as i call it , is one of the best ways to condition any type of dog .it"s good for keeping there pads hard and nails short , also you can pick up on any problems the dog might have,by keeping a keen eye on it. pulling might be fun to some but not me ,i do a lot of hill walking in UK and have a damaged knee and hip joint from what i think is being pulled by 40lb of dog down hill plus the weight of a pack ,you should here some comments i get like "thats cheating your dog is pulling you up the fell" yes i say but the fucker will be pulling me down also ! so i put a stop to innappropriate pulling lol ,ouch
