Hanging Scale Question

I have just purchased a 'hanging scale' to weigh the dogs, it looks similar to this:

    DIGITAL FISHING SCALES - 50kg/120lb

Anyway, what do I put the dogs 'in' to have them weighed. I realize this is not made for dogs, necessarily, but, what can I put them in. What can I make or buy?

    Any help would be appreciated.

a sling. easiest thing to do is to go to an outdoor outfitter/ or fabric store and get 8 ft. of 1" flat nylon

For now use a descent length belt will do.

You can put them in a harness.

all i had right handy was some thin rope, but it works fine for the smaller dogs. 1 piece about 10' long will handle just about any size dog you might need to weigh ( we all know the various sizes of dogs we get at weight pulls)

Lol RR, he already had them ready for such ocassion. He's on top of it. Done! What else you got? LMAO

  8. hey not trying to be funny or an azzhole, but i purchased a scale JUST like that 1 and it was a piece of SH^t, it worked for me like twice and then the calibration went off on it and could never get it back right, i thought it was all cool and stuff wen i first got it cus it was digital and all that but i went back to my old trusty sliding scale u can get from tractor supply, its cheaper and more accurate imo, here's the link to check it out

but to answer ur question i usually use a a shoe string, or really strong thin yarn tied into a circle and bring it under there legs and chest, cus wen u get to using rope it could thro u off a 1/4 lb or so u know, but hope this helps, and i wish u well with ur new scale

  9. You didn't really just say use yarn or shoestrings did you? LOL

The rope RR showed is perfect. If you want something "nicer" why not give Shane at Stillwater a holler. I'm sure he could hook you up with a length of 1" or 1 1/2" nylon also.

  10. yea i actually did SIR, and in MY experience the rope that the other fella was using can thro the weight off as i explained, just giving my opinion.

  11. I second Scratchin Dog's suggestion. I have a scale just like the one pictured and use a harness to put them on it. My harness weighs about 1.40 lbs. So, i just subtract the weight of the harness from total weight. Easy.

 how is that? the rope weighs in at less than 3 ounces ( and thats using a 3/8" rope). i have never ever heard anyone cry foul because of rope weight. you weigh one dog...then the next, then the next...they all have the same ~added~ weight of the sling.
w/ a sliding scale you cant, but if you had a digital you could tare it out w/ just the rope hanging from the hook if yo uwere worried about rope weight

RR we may not see eye to eye but that is a good video! What about weighing bigger dogs like 80lbs? Our WP club is getting things together and I can see weighing a small dog with a rope like that but with the bigger dogs it might be an issue. I was just going to make a leather sling, but that video gave me some good idea's.

for the larger dogs ( and most dogs really) i like the flat nylon webbing, used the same way as rope (i was all out- i used my last bit of it hanging up springpoles in the kennel runs). w/ the webbing ( say in 1.5 or 2") you are distributing the load over a greater surface area, thus causing less ~discomfort~ to the dog ( i.e less like to feel like a pinch point, less likely to wiggle out)
for a weight pull club, something that is going to see regular use and be taken care of you might look into something like this...

and "endless" sling is the easiest route, otherwise you will need 2 "eyed" slings and a shackle to join them

Missy Villines will be (or is) selling weighing straps.
We zero out the scale w/the strap on it, or subtract the weight of the strap, depending on the type of scale. We use a long, flat strap about 1 1/2 to 2inches thick. It is put on the dogs body like rallyracer's video, but the loop around the neck is allowed to snug up around the neck, and the dog is hung by the 2 loops that go around its waist. You should tip the dog just slightly, so his head is slightly higher than his rear, so that he doesn't wind up hanging w/his head pointing down, then they feel like they're falling, and struggle.

I see that. 10 bucks, shoot, can't beat that. I have some old 'tow straps', for the time being i'm going to try that stuff out. I appreciate all the assitance ladies and gentlemen:)

  19. I'mm with everyone that suggested a harness...a nylon working harness that stillwater sells works fine. Another option (that I learned from purplepig a while back) is to use two of the wide weight lifting belts w/out locking the bar. The dogs weight would keep the belt closed, and you'd loop them together with a rope and d ring at the top...I like the rope set up that rallyracer used. Although I'd prefer a wider piece of material (definately not yarn or string lol) we learn something new from each other everyday.

edit. BTW @ Andrew PB ...tow straps will work. Just loop 'em to fit in front of the rear legs and behind the front legs, connect with a D ring at the top, and you're in business.

I use a thin rope or a leather shoe string! A simple tie around the armpit/chest and your done!
