I have plenty of wood breaking sticks, what I got to thinking was that I'd like to try a plastic type material for them.Something weatherproof since I like to have a stick close to every chain area in case something were to happen, and either me or someone else that was around didn't have a stick handy.Since I have several dog houses made from the blue plastic barrels I had some scraps left from the holes I cut in them. What I done was make some breaking sticks from the piece of the barrels I cut out.I was wondering would the material be to hard or do you think it'd be ok.

I was going to try a cutting board but my local WalMart is crap. They didn't have them,I couldn't hardly believe it.So I just seen the cut out pieces of barrel and decided to give it a try.Dull a knife fairly quick but with a little whittling I got to the right shape.I cut them into strips with a jig saw first though and then shaped them up.Not pretty but they work.

i would worry about the thickness/stiffness ( or lack thereof)

The one's I'm using are pretty thick,at least as thick as a cutting board. The barrels I've been using are pretty thick on the lids, that's the part of the barrel I was using.Just next to where the little holes that screw in are. It's surprising how stiff they actually are.I'm still keeping my nice wooden ones when I expect to need it.These are for emergency use, just a precaution.

I've been thinking of keeping one hanging on the deck in the back yard(out of sight, of course), so that it's handy outside as that is where excitement is usually highest and possibility of needing it. I coat mine with a stain/polyurethane to keep them slick and reduce splintering - I imagine they would last OK outside if you just give 'em a fresh coating each year. Right now, I keep one hanging inside and one in the truck at all times, but it's hard to have too many too handy.
