Help!* I Need Some Advice...

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by PrettyPitPrinces, Mar 8, 2010.

  1. Recently, my dog was released from the animal hospital after a 4 night stay. Her intestines ruptured from eating so much junk (like sticks, bones, pine cones, just everything she could get her paw on). But now that I got her home she is on 3 different medications, and the Hills Prescription Dog Food I/D. And over the course of this illness she went from 75 lbs to 58 lbs.
But what my question is, the vet said to give her 1.5 cups of food for breakfast and 1.75 cups of food for dinner. When my dog eats she acts like she is starving to death and scarfs it down quickly and sits and crys looking for more! Should I give into her and feed her more, or keep it what he vet said? Also, keep in mind, before she went into the hospital she was eating 4-4.5 cups of Eukanuba Lamb and Rice a day!
Any comments or advice is much appreciated!!
    Thanks!*

I'd personally stick to what the vet has recommended.

Any chance of a pic of your dog?

Stick with what the vets says because i dont know the size of your cups but 4 -4.5 cups is a lot! What breed of dog do you have because 58lb is still a big dog.

Hey, I know dogs get into and eat things that they should not. Mine certainly have. But, I'm wondering where/how this dog was kept that would allow her so much access to garbage that she ruptured her intestines?

As for the food, stick to the vet's advice unless you want more unnecessary holes in your dog's stomach. Limiting the amount of expanding kibble in her system reduces the work her intestines have to do, and gives them a chance to heal.

Plus, she might lose some weight this way. After all, 75 pounds is a damned big bitch.

  5. Jaida (my dogs name) lives in the house. she is only outside when we go on walks or go outside to play fetch and stuff like that. she also goes to doggie day care 4 days a week where she gets into all kinds of stuff! but she has a ton of toys and i'm other pit owners know that when you give a pit a toy it disappears in like 10 minutes. or at least they do with mine!
Also, Jaida is a full pit with papers. She is Gotti and Razors Edge mix.

Perhaps if the dog were getting a little more outside time, it wouldn't be handling its stress by chewing everything in sight.

If your dog is getting into all kinds of stuff and eating unsafe objects at doggie daycare, perhaps you should change your doggie daycare and sue them to recover the costs of the four night stay at the vet.

About the toy thing; "pit owners" with a clue figure out that if your dog cannot play with toys without making them disappear you either supervise play or don't give them toys,...much less a ton of them. Try taking away all of the crap toys that do nothing except make you feel better and teach your dog to handle stress by chewing. Get the dog a large Nylabone and nothing else. Everything else should be off-limits. When she becomes reliable with the one toy, add a Kong. That way she has two toys that she cannot instantly destroy to choose from, and you have less crap underfoot. Plus, with the money you save on toys you can get some training for you and your dog.

stick with what the vet told you. also you should not even need to feed your dog 4-4.5 cups of food. my house dog is around 60 and he only gets 2 cups a day, feed only once a day. like yours he is not very active so there is no need to feed that much.

get rid of them toys and get the big kong ball. that should last longer than the others and is probably safer.
