I volunteer at Animal Protection in my city and at any given time half or more of the dogs there are pits. I have fallen in love with pit bulls and I would really like to have one of my own. I would like to find ways to raise awarness about this breed, they are the sweetest dogs I've ever encountered and I am one of the only people at Animal Protection that will walk these dogs or love these dogs and it really makes me upset. They get passed over by people coming to look at all of the dogs even though they are the most friendly ones! They see the name and move on. So I am here to gain more knowlege of the breed and find out what people do to enlighten the ignorant. :)

Good luck we breed needs more advocates. I would read up on the breed more though before owning one. It would help you out in the long run.

nice to have a lover of the breed show interest...and its good to have you here. Yes people like us arent easy to find, we are the ones who love the underdog, and love the natural born fighter in life....APBTs are like that big ol guy who might look mean but is really a teddy bear...around the right people...see most APBTs are like the best lap dog in the world until they see another dog...thats why people think they are people aggressive, but prey drive isnt people aggressiveness so its good you want to learn things about them and own one one day because Ibet youd be the type to pass on the info our dogs aint murderers and freaks of nature. I think if you dedicate some time to learning here you will be rewarded with one of your own. the best dog in the world is the APBT. It just takes time and we all have that while our supply lasts, so I hope you find a good one to adopt or just have and I hope one day your best friend will thank you for saving him from people whod rather pass them by as you say...Thank God there is people like you...who stop to make friends.

Well, I have a chihuahua and several pits. As a matter of fact several people have the combination of the chi and bulldog here. Hmm, interesting, anyway. What I have noticed is that it works especially well raising the pup with the chi(smaller dogs), but even a grown one can adapt well. They do very well with smaller dogs as they are not a threat to their dominance. All my bulldogs are out to show that they are the alpha(concerning other dogs of cource, never towards me) so I must keep them seperate. I have one that comes in at night and she was not raised around this chi we have, and the only problem is that she desperately wants to play with him, as he with her, but he is a teacup and one swipe of the paw would break his back, so we have to supervise very closely to avoid this situation. Being aware of possible risks, and avoiding them. Never wait for the unprobable to happen before you do something. Always anticipate it, and take corrective measures. Especially outside you home. As you know, they have bad enough rep that we dont need to help others destroy the greatest dog in the world! They are the most loving and affectionate dogs ever. Hands down. My little girls, 4 and 6, play with them all the time, never a problem. They actually will abuse them, play to rough with them, but the bulldogs never do anything out of the way. I do keep the children out of the chain runs as the dog could get excited and knock the child down eith a chain, wrap them up with the chain, then the newspaper would say that "Man's 4 year old girl was visciously attacked and mauled to death by Pit Bull". So I just dont give a place for anything like this to happen. Please dont misunderstand, I love my children FAR more than the dogs! I do, however, love the dogs also, but I do love the breed more than the individual dogs themselves.

So, socialize the pup well, before getting one, I would suggest you already have a secure place for the dog, knowing that what would contain a normal dog many time will keep these dogs for 5 seconds.

It is a very big blessing to me to have heard your first post. A breath of fresh air, as I am sure it is to all of us. I believe that you will be a very positive addition to the breed as a whole. Thank you so much for opening up your heart to what truely is "Mans(and womans) Best Friend".

Yes welcome to the board and yes there are alot of people with a lot of knowledge that you can learn from. But as Marty said they dont sugar coat it. They will tell you exactly how it is. Good luck with your venture and keep on trying to keep a good image with the breed. I have met a lot of people that will turn up thier noses at the mere mention of the breed. But I do try to educate those willing to listen to what is being said to them. I know my father in law is one of these people and he has been turned to believe they are not these evil monsters that he once believed. As well as a few others.
