Is this still something used? I used to buy a bottle of this from the tractor supply for 35$ and it would last what seemed like over a year. The vets always advise against it. I assume because they want you to buy their 65$ per pill stuff. I do the 1/10 of 1cc per 10lbs of body weight, is that correct? Is this safe? I have never had any issues that I am aware of, as the issue my current dog has isn't from that. Also, the shots. Everything except for rabies I buy from the same store. Never had an issue, and is much cheaper. Any one advise against this? I have never seemed to have an issue with temp. Just trying to see if what I am doing is the norm, okay, risky, etc. As I said it seems to save money, but I am always told it isn't a good idea from the vet...who always sends me home with a friggin whopper of a bill.

used it a few times,,,,it don't clear all worms/etc,,,from what i remember...a few months later i would give a worm tab/etc...saw one dog have a bad reaction..but was saved when the vet gave a jab/??....the warning is spec; for farmers cause they sometimes have a habit off grabbing the sheep dog and giveing a sheep dose while doing them, which is way to much...just don't over-dose....

Thanks, I always pay attention to the dosage as I hear it can damage the kidney's if given an overdose. I just wondered since a lot of people maintain a lot of dogs, it would be very expensive to buy from the vets. Ae there any other non-vet bought products that are good for worming that aren't as expensive, yet effective?

Ivermectin is great for preventing heartworms. I use it on a monthly basis for that, at a very low dose. There are much better choices to get get rid of other intestinal parasites, or "worms". I am not sure what type of risk there is for heartworms in Ohio.

There is nothing wrong with administering vaccines at home as long as you purchase the proper vaccine, and they are stored and administered properly. There is no difference in protection for your pet at all.

Go to the upper right hand corner and do a search on wormers. Should be a few good threads on the subject.

Thanks I have tried to find some threads on flea/tick medicine by searching, but haven't seen much. What do those use who have large yards, in the woods? I cannot imagine those guys buying doses from the vets but I don't know!

Ivomec is failing in some places for heart worm prevention. The heart worms have developed an immunity to the chemical. Next step is pro heart in these areas at an average cost of $60 for a shot that last 6months. It is weight based so bigger dogs may be more smaller may be less.

What is pro heart? Something your vet gives?

Yes Pro Heart is an injection given by your vet. It was pulled off the market a few years back due to adverse reactions including dogs dying. It was reintroduced again.

I have used ivermectin as well for years at the 1/10cc per 10pds. Never had an issue. Dogs are tested yearly for heartworms.

Yes the original pro heart was pulled. In my area ivomec was failing. I and a neighbor both had young dogs test positive. Both on ivomec. 1 older dog of mine also tested positive after ivomec for 9 years. We changed to pro heart. I have used it now for 3 years with no issue. If ivomec is not failing in ur area u should be fine. There are areas that are bad while other areas have no issue at all. We were in the Mississippi River delta of AR. Where skeeters are thick as water at night.

Proheart formula did not change. Now clients sign a release before the injection is is given. And now vets have to take a certification class to give it.

I lived the past 8 years in the Panhande of FL where the mosquito is the state bird. Similar to the MS Delta region. We did see a lot of Heartworm positives where I worked. But it was due to owner compliance. Either they missed doses or was not giving anything. Heartworm is like birth control. It is not 100% effective. But with the shot it takes out the factor of owner error.

One of the benefits from buying heartworm prevention from a Vet is the guaranty. If you gave a negative HW test and have proof that you bought 12 months of prevention. And your dog comes back positive the company will pay for treatment.

This was released back in 2013 regarding resistance
