~ Keeping Weight On Pups ~

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by Your Worst Nightmare, May 7, 2004.

  1. I know alot of people have problems once in a while keeping weight on pups (big litters).

What have you guys used to keep them pups nice phat and healthy?
Of course you should always remember to have them wormed out and free of coccsida :)

I use this product called POUNDS PLUS, sometimes I use oatmeal + buttermilk.

i have always used evaporated goats milk make into almost milk shake thickness and dumped all over their food. as the dogs are completely taken away from their mom i just shake dry evap goat milk on their food. really works wonders and a bag 25 lbs will last a good 4-5 litters. works as good as cottage cheese but alot cheaper.

I use a product called calf manna and its basically like goats milk. Comes in powder form and I mix it with puppies food. Ialso at feeding time make sure that there isnt a couple of bullies getting the bulk of the food also.

  5. I use goats milk. I also free feed puppies to keep them nice and plump :)

  6. you have good luck with free feeding pups i was told to just feed them just enough is all

We have used the Goat's milk and we have tried cottage cheese in conjunction with puppy kibble. But, the best results we have seen is Peak Grow with Chicken Soup for Soul (puppy kibble). Have never free fed and the pups were very healthy and active. :)

I give ESiblac powder tomother over her food prior to birth of pups. Once pups arrive, to give mom a nursing break i hand feed at about 2 weeks olds using goats milk or ESiblac powder. At 3 weeks I start them on blended puppy kibble with a can of moist food. Pups maintain weight with minimal stress on mother. at 5 weeks I mix the can with the dry kibble. Once a month I give them a can of tuna, salmon or mackeral over the dry kibble after 6 weeks. after 6 weeks i only use dry kibble. i seperate each pup to ensure no bullies dominate the food bowls.

  11. human infant milk, can be good, you can also use a combination of yolks of eggs, moist dogfood mixed in with the dry dogfood.

  12. you can also use some high fat like non-dairy creamer, it will put the weight on anything and it is harmless to them, actually they like it alot. Keeping flees off your pups is a big thing as intestinal parasites are caused by those little guys, I often spread diazinon over the puppy grassy area of the puppy pen, then lightly water it several days before putting puppies in the pen, by then the diazinon has disipated, and the fleas and ticks are either dead or have left the area.

I use 4oz. petmilk, 4oz. water, 1egg per 4oz.,and 1 tsp of dark karo syrup. It works great.

  15. I have always used a good puppy food like diamond and then every other day scramble a couple of raw eggs and mix in with it and that seems to do the trick.

  16. sometimes I will pour bacon grease on the food right before I serve it to them this makes the wieght go on attracts them more to the food and their coats look better as well.

I myself feed CNI's Nurture to the pups and mother as well! If the pups are still feeding off the mother I separate the litter in half to feed.....separate the mother from the pups to give her a chance to recover and produce more milk. I will also feed the pups individually sometimes to make sure each pup get there fill. Remember to worm them out weekly.
I don't see the need to free feed also as they just end up shitting most of it or knocking the kibble all over! I feed pups twice a day and they have done fine!
