How do you guys feel about these? I like to take good care of my dogs but I'm not a fan of pumping them full of vaccines, and every year the vets keep preaching I need this or that vaccine that I've never given before. However ticks are really bad where I live the past few years and my dogs get the deer ticks that burrow deep sometimes it usually takes time to heal and they can get pretty crappy sores from them. What are the pros and cons of these vaccines?

i don't vaccinate any of mine for lyme. never have. i live in an area of the country where ticks are very prevalant and can pick off as many as a dozen when out walking them. and that's the key=get them off before they engorge. since the percentage of dogs actually getting lyme is so low, imo, the vaccines are not even worth doing. when it comes to chemicals and my dogs less is definitly more. i honestly don't see any pros to getting the dogs vaxed against lyme.

Just a check up will catch it depending on when it was contracted. It takes over quick and any prevention I am not quick to agree..but f u pick off ticks...get em checked once or twice a year I'd say.

I've never had a tick on my dog ,why not save the pain of picking the ticks off with a flee and tick prevention.? Does it not work for you.

They do not do much here I use natural repellant such as garlic..cedar chip bedding..but nothing seems to be 100%effective.

i don't find it a "pain" to pick them off. only takes a few seconds. as stated, not into chemicals with my dogs. many years ago when i used to frontline, diligently i might add, (every month), i had a female who tested positive for lyme. stopped with those products after that. seemed pointless. no issues with parasites since then. no chemicals either. fleas are not/never have been an issue here.

Always sprayed the dog down after walks in the woods w/ Adams Flea and Tick spray - be sure to get the water based - not the alcohol based spray (alcohol stings/burns any scrapes or cuts they have). Misted the dog down and then ran a flea comb over the dog.

I use a flee/tick/mosquito repelant- K9 Advantix II. I do not vaccinate for lymes disease. The vaccination does not prevent all strands of lymes, plus it has a relatively high rate or reactions in dogs. That is why they pulled the lymes vaccination for humans. If your dog shows the symptoms of Lymes disease get them checked out. Usually strong antibiotics is all they need. Lymes disease in dogs is not as bad as it is in humans.

It's not as bad in humans either if caught with in the first 72 hours and the tick hasn't been feeding for longer than 24 hours. I got stage 1 Lyme Disease last October. I was Hunting Whitetail during the early Archery season with my son and Deer ticks are pretty prevailant here. I had a 6 inch Bullseye on back of my right hip area and the tick was on me for 48 hours before I found it. The most common carrier is the female Deer Tick. If caught an pulled within the first 24 hours its nothing more typicaly than a 10 day cycle of Dyoxicycline. Stage 2 and 3, well thats a different story. Point is, if caught early Lyme Disease isn't that big of a deal. Key word being early.

I use Permethin Spray and I have only pulled 3 ticks off my dogs in the last 18 years. I also use Diatomaceous Earth in the cedar chip bedding in the dogs houses. I spray the perimeter of my property and the perimeter of the dog houses with Home Defense twice a year, once in the Spring and once in the summer. Never have Fleas or ticks. I do not vaccinate for Lyme, never have.
