MO: "Walk a hound, shed a pound"

COLUMBIA - Every Saturday, you can help a shelter dog stay active and get some exercise yourself.

The Central Missouri Humane Society's "Walk a hound, shed a pound" program is a win-win situation for people and dogs alike.

This spring's session of Saturday walks runs until the end of May. You can pick your dog and take it on the Bear Creek Trail at 8 a.m., 9 a.m., or 10 a.m.

About 7,000 animals are brought to the Humane Society every year. The walking program helps get some of the pups a family of their own.

"We have had some adoptions and it's been a wonderful thing to see," Humane Society director Rebecca Johnson said. "We also know that we're making these dogs more adoptable, because they get exercise, they have practice walking on a leash, and generally when people come see them on a Saturday afternoon, the shelter is a quieter place."

This is the fourth year for the program. The program costs $10 per session and $5 for guests.
