Volunteers encouraged to "Date With a Dog"

KALISPELL--The Flathead County Animal Shelter has been struggling all summer long to adopt out enough dogs to stay under its maximum capacity.

But instead of asking potential pet owners to come look at dogs, the shelter will now start bringing dogs to them.


FCAS introduced a new volunteer program this week called "Date With a Dog," to encourage local pet adoption.

Volunteers will take shelter dogs out to public events and places to meet people, and the dogs will wear vests saying they're ready to be adopted.

The program helps the dogs socialize and have fun, while also making them more adoptable.

Volunteers say the new program shows what each dog is like outside of its kennel.

"I think when people see a dog out socializing, it really shows the community and shows people who this dog truly is," said shelter volunteer Cindie Jobe. "You get to see more of their personality. They're out sniffing, being playful, and being affectionate."

The Flathead County Animal Shelter is still looking for volunteers, especially for the Northwest Montana Fair and the parade preceding it.
