Just wondering What the pros and cons of both an overhead cable run vs. a ground cable run are.

Good point. Don't most people use O-rings on the ground setup instead of pulleys, though?

i actualy prefer ground setups. but the bigger thing is what is the surrounding area like- lots of trees? if so, then above ground is the way to go.

    best thing i have found:
get some schedule 40 pipe ( you can get this at home depot, lowes, etc) prefferably 2 8ft+ lengths
get minimum 1/4" cable ( check the load rating on the cable), vinyl coated is best. a dozen crosby clamps (cable clamps)
    couple bags or quickcrete
    quality pulley

you want atleast 2 feet of the pipe in the ground and a liberal amount of earth removed, replaced by the crete.

there are several ways to attach the cable (looped using the crosbys) to the vertical pipes-i used seamless stainless steel rings welded to the pipe.
pulley goes on- and make sure to put a stop on each end of the run so the dog cannot get wrapped around the pipe ( figure a 15ft. lead off the pulley, you want a stop at 15ft. from each end)
i will try to dig up some pics of my old setups

  8. Thanks for the info, i allready have the post cemented in the ground, just wasnt sure on the size of the cable to get, gotta about a 40-50 foot length i gotta cover and didnt wanna get too small a size. Thanks again.

I like the axel in the ground set up. Just nail the axel in the ground it's easy to set up. I like the chain set-up cause like i said before in another thread kinda gives them a work out.:o

FIRST POST HERE. I have 15 above ground runs . Most have 75-100lb Americans so strength was importnat in building. I use trees as Poles. I double wrap around the tree( tried 1/2" eyelets but the Bulldogs eventually straightened out the eyelet).. Now here is a big key for Cable wire use. I use NON-Coated 5/16 stainless steel wire. I have had the dogs pull so hard they pulled the wire from within the coating. The coating was still in the clamps and the dog was where else, attached to another on his new 60 foot lease... I also use a Turnbuckle to get and keep wire tight. Use a min 0f 3 clamps when securing wire. I use a 3" National Mfg block&sheeve without the swivel built in. The wheels are easliy replaced by a kotter pin(1handed n the dark easy). Then swivels top n bottom and a decent chain, not over the top. As your system is only as strong as its weakest link. which is the wire and clamps. Becuase of the overhead motion I use a Big Snap and a Bullsnap to finally secure the dogs. Hope it all makes sense. The dogs love the freedom and stay in great shape.
I buy every thing needed at Tractor Supply.

    Bumpity Bump Bump.

Who uses them and which do you prefer? I've set up one using trees already but would like to use axels and do some ground setups also.

I like the ground set ups. Like rally said, but use a truck to stretch the cable. Its also a good way around anti tether laws

We use utility pole guy wire set ups installed on the ground. Dig holes on both ends and stake them down, the stakes are only a foot long , bury it all back. We use 2 collar rings for the cable attached to a 4 or 5 ft light chain with a nice collar swivel. This has worked out great for us, the hounds fly/zip back and forth super freely. Most important is that we are in compliance with all the local and county tethering laws...

Don't have to deal with tethering laws out here just thinking about setting some more up. The one I have set up now is on the ground but set up between two trees. I can't find any REAL heavy duty pulleys that don't cost a arm and a leg.
