Peeing in Crate

I place my dog in a crate during the day while I am at work. Looking for a kennel/chain setup when spring comes around. He is almost 9months old and he is in the crate from 8am - 5:30pm. Most of the time I come home to pee in his crate. He rarely has accidents in house so I am thinking he juat can't hold it that long. I do put a bowl of water in his crate with very little water. Curious to hear if its just too long to ask him to hold it or if I am looking at something else here? Thanks.

Simple as this... you leave him in there for 8 hours.

You ever tried to hold in a piss for 8 hours?

Get him a chain setup - fixed.

Make sure he doesn't have a UTI. If everything is ok, I would take the water out of the crate.

Also, make sure the crate is cleaned with an enzymed odor and stain remover:)

  4. Don't give him the water. Don't give him any water at all in the morning. If there's any way you can make it home for lunch you should do so to let the dog out to go.

Wow, nine months old, cooped up nine and a half hours, alone, with a bowl of water. Considering how dogs drink when they become stressed, like from being cooped up alone for nine and a half hours without a break,...rocket science.

That's about three and a half hours too long without a break. Be glad you're just dealing with cleaning a little urine, instead of fixing urinary tract, kidney, or uncontrollable pissing problems from holding it for an unreasonably long time-considering age, conditions, and being set-up for failure.

    ^ Exactly my point.

You really need to get him outside man, I'm not bollocking you, everyone has obligations and I'm sure we'd all much rather not having to work and being able to fuck with our dogs all day.

But not giving him water for 9 hours is not a good plan either... what happens if it gets hot, you're worried about UTI and shit now, dogs can dehydrate and die of kidney failure, get brain problems and all sorts of shit if you withold fluids for extended periods.... sure 9 hours PROBABLY wont do any harm, but why tempt fate.

Get him outside, do him and you a favor, he'll be happier, you'll be happier, everyone benefits.

Thank you for the reality check. I grew up with house dogs and am not use to leaving a dog outdoors. I agree though. Its time to get him a nice setup in my backyard.

Where does everyone get their axels? Junkyard?

Hey bro, I dealt with the same thing early on. Having him outside on a chain set up or in a good kennel while you are at work will really take away the head ache. You can pick up axles pretty cheap at the junk yard.

Junk yard and wreckers are a good place, even busted ass ones are great, coz they usually give em away.

Check the laws in your area before putting him on a setup. Many localities have enacted laws limiting the number of hours a dog can be tethered outside.

He is too young to be in a crate for 9 hours IMO. I would hire an experienced dog walker to take him out during the day if a setup is not possible.

    Good Luck!

You bring up an excellent point Nell Bell:)

Also, if you do end up having the dog outside, please make sure the set up is secure and make sure your neighbors like pit bulls. People can be mean and try to hurt this breed.

I had this problem with my dog, she is 2 1/2, but she was doing it for attention, not because she was having a hard time holding it. She stays in there from 730A to 230P. I started giving her bones from the local deli, and she stopped. I also dont leave water in her crate (not that she drinks it anyway, she doesnt drink water unless there is something mixed in, even if its cereal). She gets her food at 730A so that way she has all day to digest it, so I dont have to clean it up when I get home.
Just try the bone idea, maybe it will keep his mind off of you being gone.
