Permethrin 10% - advice on use & dilution?

Hello all. I had read in the thread about fleas about Gard Star. I rung my co-op & they said they didn't have Gard Star, but had something like it called Martin's permethrin 10%. The man at the co-op told me it was strong stuff & that if I was going to use this as a spot on monthly treatment on the dog to dilute it 2 oz to 1 gallon. My questions are thus:

    - Does anyone here use permethrin 10%? How do you like it?

    - Do you dilute it? If so what are the dilution measurements?

    - Is application still 40 ccs from neck to rump?

    - Also I heard someone say dilute it with baby oil, while the man at the co-op said use water. Which is better?

    - Also on whom can this mixture be used on? Adult dogs I know, but what about puppies, pregenant bitches or lactating bitches?

Any information is appreciated as this will be the first time I will be using permethrin 10%. Previously I have used Frontline drops or Comfortis pills.
    Thanks in advance! :)

Sorry ive never used but i will tell you whats great for fleas and ticks and it last for a long time. its call " bayer advanced garden tree & shrub". you can get it at wal-mart, lowes, ect its about $20 for 32 oz it has the same stuff in that front line does. it will be in the garden department. you do not dilute it. you just get a spray bottle (you can get them for $1) pour it in there and spray there whole body(not the head though). are dogs are in the woods and you wont find a tick or flea on them anywhere. thanks i hope this helps you. i know it isnt what you want to know but it might help you or someone else. good luck. if you need to know anything else feel free to ask.

Bayer tree & shrub works great, but you have to make sure you get the bottle labeled "BAYER TREE & SHRUB INSECT CONTROL" DO NOT USE THE PROTECT AND FEED VERSION AS IT CONTAINS FERTILIZER THAT IS HARMFUL TO YOUR DOGS. It works exactly like K9 Advantage, to get the same results as K9 Advantix you will have to mix it with the permethrins.

I'm not a big fan of anything with Permethrin in it.

It's generally an insecticide used on crops and is one of the ones that has been shown to cause seizures, tumors, and flu like symptoms in humans that consume it. It's also HIGHLY toxic to cats and can cause death within an hour. I've seen some people use it effectively but there are just to many risks involved for me to use it.

If you dilute it into a spray bottle of some sort, be very careful not to get it into your eyes and wear gloves.

I don't know if you've tried food grade diatomaceous earth but it's amazing stuff and isn't harmful to pets. No flies, ticks, or flea's around here.

what we do is spray the whole dog expect the head. just spray there sides, back, and under the dog. i dont use it on dogs under 6 months of age and we dont mix it. but the key is to also treat the ground. i can tell you how to do that with something special that we use and it works great ask me if you need to know more. thanks. good luck

p.s. just spray them down real good, you dont soak them in it but you do want spray to get them real good with it

Re: Permethrin 10% - advice on use & dilution?

Thank you all for the information. Must the permethrin be sprayed on the dog? Can it be mixed into a solution & used like Frontline ( i.e. - applied only at the neck & rump)? I perfer not to use it as a dip or spray b/c I don't want to fight the dogs every month.

As for the outside, I do not really have a problem with fleas in the yard. My problem comes in when we bought our place. It was a rental that allowed pets. When we bought it, it already had an absolutely out of control flea infestation. As a result, we fight fleas indoors every single year & I was looking for something to put on the dogs besides Frontline & Comfortis. Frontline works so-so & the Comfortis works better, but they're both too proud of their products.

When I read about the Gard Star it piqued my interest, but sadly as mentioned in my OP the co-op didn't have Gard Star, they only had the Permethrin 10%. I read the label & it does say it is approved for use on dogs, but it didn't give a dilution directions or anything.

Sorry for all the questions but this would be my first time using this stuff. :o

Ok, Here's the breakdown - use Bayer Tree & Shrub Insect Control mixed with permethrin 10% at a ratio of 4 to 1. It is easiest if you put it in some sort of squirt bottle (one of the old red & yellow condiment bottles works great) You start on the tail about 1/2 inch out from the base and squeeze a line all the way up to just between the ears (It should average out to about 20 ml for a 50 lb. dog). Give it a good rub to work it in and you are good to go for about a month. It works just like K9 Advantix. This works very well and the information and amounts came from one the greatest dogmen I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, who himself has used it for many years and his dogs are always insect and parasite free.

Thanks for all the info. I just switched to Comfortis and you are right ABK, They want a fortune for it. Having different size dogs is not a plus either. Just been buying the large tab and breaking them down for the weight of each dog.

I will give the Bayer a try this week. Does it help at all with fly's???

    Thanks GAPits!

OK, another silly question though - you said a mix ratio of 4 to 1. Is it 4 parts bayer to 1 part permethrin or vice versa? And how much is a part? For example, 4 cups of bayer to 1 cup permethrin, etc.

Once again, I apologize, but I want to get this right! :o

Re: Permethrin 10% - advice on use & dilution?

Sorry should have clarified that, :) It is 4 parts Bayer to 1 part Permethrin. Whatever you feel will be enough is what you mix. You can mix as little or as much as you want from tablespoons to gallons. You can also add a little bit of alcohol for a quick kill if you have already seen fleas or ticks on them, but it is not necessary.

If you haven't used Permethrin before be very very careful when using it on your dogs!!! While it works like a charm in regards to flies, ticks and mosquitos it has the potential to kill your animal because it it so strong and toxic. I have used BioSpot which has a high percentage of Permethrin in it on my dogs last year. Both my male and my Husky were doing fine with it but when I put it on my girl she broke out in MASSIVE hives and started getting dizzy so I washed if off right away. Better be safe than sorry.

Thanks. The co-op guy said it was strong stuff. I will most certainly dilute it & keep a sharp eye out for any reactions.

I use Ortho Tree and Shrub but make sure if you use this product not to get the one that says "weed and feed" just the plain Ortho Tree and Shrub.

the mix is 4 oz. of permethrin in to 20oz. of mineral oil in a spray bottle (makes a 2.5% mix based on the 9.1% strength of the permethrin). Using it as a water based is the reason the products do not work for any length of time. going to an oil-based spray will allow it to last much longer....US1
