WELLINGTON, Kan. (KAKE) — An early morning fire destroyed a home in Wellington, Kansas, but had it not been for the family’s pet, the fire could have been a lot worse.

Kratos is 3-year-old pitbull and he’s a hero.

Early Friday morning, Kratos noticed something wasn’t right in the house so he woke everyone up.

James McEachern says it started when something went wrong with the breakers.

“We took an extension cord and ran a couple of space heaters so we could have some heat for the night,” McEachern said.

He went back to bed but Kratos wasn’t having it.

“He came up to the bedroom door and was really barking quite a bit, and he’s not one to bark a lot, so I knew something was wrong,” McEachern said.

When McEachern got up the second time, he could hear electric charges coming from the fuse box. It was then he realized Kratos was trying to save their lives.

“I didn’t think anything was wrong, but it sounded like squirrels were in the attic,” McEachern explained. “It just sounded funny. When I looked outside, I could see a red glow off the swing set we got in the he back yard, so I stepped outside and there was just fire coming out the vent. So that’s when I rushed through and got everyone up and we got out of the house.”

It took fire crews about six hours to battle the flames. Most of it was built up right up in the attic area. All of the walls were able to sustain which made it easier for the family to get out.

Despite losing their home and almost everything they own, the McEachern’s don’t want you to feel sorry for them. What’s of value is each other.

“It’s not like I’m going to sit here and cry all day,” McEachern said. “It’s just something that happens. You have to live through it.”

Three adults and two dogs were inside at the time. The fire caused an estimated $65,000 worth of damage.
