Buddy has some dogs, has one that was healthy. He noticed one day the dog is not looking right, mind you this guy takes great care of his hounds, well he was with the dog one day and it was perfectly healthy, running his chain firing off at the dog next to him. Next day he goes out on the yard, said dog is not looking good, wouldn't come out of his barrel, he drug him on out and he was wobbly in the legs, flopped down and pissed on himself, piss was orange. Any ideas what it could be? He isnt very good with the internet so i am asking for him. Recap, dog is fine one day, the next day he is damn near dying with what sounds like kidney failure do to something?

Your friend needs to get the dog to a vet. Bring a urine sample.

When someone has to ask, the first step is the vet.

Rule #1 is the dogs can't care for themselves.

Off color urine is can be a urinary tract infection or a kidney related issue.

Dehydration is a possibility. I have had dogs that I did not feel drank enough on their own so when I fed dry there's was soaked.

Heat related stress, active chain dogs in 90 plus weather is always a concern.

The tract infection can be treated with anitbiotics.

Not knowing requires testing and testing normally means a trip to the vet.

    Sooner the better.

Thanks Chel and Slim, hes been working on him this morning, we knew it was something affecting the kidneys and kind of figured it was infection, dehydration, from the heat or maybe a combo of all 3, he ain't the kind of dude that will run off to the vet right away as he can and does do a lot of treatment at home if he possible. He got some electrolytes in him and ran a few shots of meds in him, we was more curious if it could of been a snake bite or some kind of bug bite, figured i would ask here and see if anyone ever experienced that before and if it is, he needs to find it and kill it.

He said he smelled a real strong odor of cucumbers the day before and someone told him that copperheads can put off that smell? I don't know shit about snakes, i don't like them lol. He also said he was acting funny the day before and wasn't wanting to go back in his barrel, which he said was odd as the dog usually sat in there during the day, which kind of made us think it could of been something that bit him in there and he didnt want to go back in.

I know sitting around and speculating won't get shit done but he did do some emergency care for the symptoms and he is taking him to the vet, so we will know soon, like i said, we was curious if a snake bite or spider bite could cause those symptoms and maybe one of the members here have experienced a snake bite or spider bite before. Again, thanks for the replies, appreciate it.

My guess it's either a bladder infection, kidney issue, stones in the kidney or liver issue.....
I'm curious to know what it is so please give update after dog gets back from vet.

Yeah, i know kidneys can really work on ya but the dog not having any legs under him and being all off balance and stuff was another concern, im sure if the kidneys are failing those symptoms can likely happen. I will see what he says, i hope it's just an infection or something because i would rather it be something simple a few antibiotics and hydration can fix VS it being a snake near his yard that is picking his dogs off.

A snake bite doing that much damage will leave a swollen mark at the bite point. Spiders the same. Look him all over, it should be visual.

The UTI tract infection, although somewhat simple, can really drag a dog down.

Dehydration and heat related issues can leave a dog wobbly, staggering and disorientated.

The problem with not knowing is not knowing. If it is a treatable kidney issue there could be long term damage before 'best shot home remedies' figure it out.

And not knocking. I do the same. And this is the advice I get as well. LOL

@slim12 I told him most of the guys here would do the same damn thing LOL!!

That was the thing that sort of ruled out a bite, he looked em over pretty damn good, said he didn't see anything but hell you never know, which is why i asked for him. After asking about the Cucumber thing here, i did do a google search and sure enough, them damn Copperheads can smell like Cucumbers. Good little tip to know, if you smell Cucumbers, watch for Copperheads!

Thanks again for the help guys.

Sounds like classic babesia to me. Need to get him an injection of Berenil, IV fluids, and on 3 weeks of doxycycline twice a day.

Update: Dog is back on his feet and doing really well. He never did figure out what it was, he just kept pumping fluids in him with IV and some meds. FWIW, the majority ruled, babesia.
