Well in the last few weeks has been a rough time.

On Monday June 11th I cam home and found Bailey dead. Brought her in to work for a necropsy and found no congenital defects, no signs of trauma, no obvious signs of poisoning. A big Fat nothing. Most likely lightening. But no obvious signs.

Then 1 week later on Monday June 18th Thera was diagnosed with Megaesophagus. Just short of her 10yr birthday (7/3)

On Sat She was hacking and vomiting. I started an IV catheter on Sun and kept her on fluids till I brought her in on Mon. She did have a slight case of Vestibular. But that has resolved.

Megaesophagus is a very frustrating disease. And it can be managed. However there are complications along the way. Many dogs do get Aspiration Pneumonia. She is maintaining as of now. But it does take over an hour and a half to feed her nighty. She has to sit upright during feedings and for at least 30 minutes after feeding. She is on meds and her spirits are the same. So we are taking it one day at a time.

The esophagus is the tube connecting the throat to the stomach. When food is perceived in the esophagus, a neurologic reflex causing sequential muscle contraction and relaxation leads to rapid transport of the food into the stomach, like an elevator going down. Other reflexes prevent breathing during this swallowing process to protect the lungs from aspiration. When these reflexes are interrupted, as happens with disease in the esophageal tissue or nerve disease, the esophagus loses its ability to transport food. Instead the esophagus loses all tone and dilates. Also, the reflex protecting the lung is disrupted and aspiration pneumonia commonly follows.

Unfortunatly there is no "cure" only management. And like my boss said it is a Death Sentence. And it is day by day.

So she is being spoiled until her time .

That is awful I am really sorry I missed that it was not curable I just went and read more about it so basically the ultimate cause of death is secondary complications which would be the aspirated pnemounia?

Terrible news! I'm sorry. How old was Bailey? She looks so happy and healthy in the pics. Not knowing the cause of death makes it even worse. It would seem that lightning would leave some kind evidence, but I don't know. Were you having lightning around that time?

How sad about Bailey - and with no real answers.... Have you seen those feeding boxes where the dog gets in it and is basically standing upright/on it's haunches - keeps the head and food source up higher...?

    Re: Rough 2 weeks.

Bailey turned 2 in April. And yes it was a bad storm that day. And our internet box is fried. A slight shock could cause an irregular heartbeat. It is a guess at best. I had her cremated and I should get her remains on Mon.

Sorry for your loss... I know of a couple that (I'm pretty sure) have been the unlucky victims of lightning.
    Good luck with everything else!
