Sprained Leg?

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by APBT_Fan100, Dec 20, 2022.

  1. I was out on a hike the other day with my dog. Conditions were pretty icy.

She went wandering off like she normally does but came back with a limp (right back leg) . I picked her up and then put her back down where she resumed roaming around (assumed she just pulled a muscle).

When I got back home she started limping again but then would go back to walking on it. She's been doing this on and off for the past two days.

Kind of confused. Any tips on what to do or what you guys think it may be would be helpful.

    Thanks.

How old is your dog and how active on a typical basis?

It can happen. The dogs are no different than us when it comes to bumps and bruises.

The only difference is that when they show physical distress or pain or limp it is usually a big deal. They deal with pain much better than we do. So when they limp it is more than likely five times the issue when we limp.

I don't rush to the vet with every little boo-boo so my advice may not be spot-on for everyone.

Don't medicate or do anything to ease the pain. Sounds horrible I know. With the mind set they are five times deeper down the injury road when they display it, if something eases it, they will then do more, further injury is more likely.

Rest and limited activity is the first step. After a couple days of good rest does not show improvement a vet trip or Xray may be warranted.

And if the rest works remember to ease back into the active lifestyle. Just like use doing too much too soon just repeats the issue but usually the second trip is a bit worse.

  4. I don't usually rush to the vet either but today was the 5th day and no signs of improvement.

Took her to the vet and they ended up doing physical exam and some x-rays. She has a luxating patella.

Treatment for now is basically some medication and rest for 2 weeks until the next checkup. Vet said surgery is a possibility but hopefully not since she is able to walk on it for certain periods of time.

Hardest part will be resting her for 2 weeks cause she is always ready for our hikes lol

Appreciate the feedback tho. Will keep you guys updated on the next visit.
