Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Houston *special needs

Discussion in 'Rescue & Adoption' started by GPBR-Angela, May 24, 2011.

  1. 2011-01-29 Hemi.jpg Hemi, Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Hemi is about 2-3 years old and is in search for a patient home, preferably a female. Because Hemi was found as a stray, we don't know his history but we believe he may have been used for breeding only. He is fearful (avoids) of some men but is not a nervous dog overall, just shy. He is crate/potty trained and does well with female dogs. Hemi is labeled as special needs because he needs a strong commitment to his rehabilitation. We are looking for an experienced handler for him, someone who will be patient and truly understanding of his needs. Please contact guardianpitrescue@gmail.com. $250

whats the $250 for??a mentally damaged dog,if its fearful of men its had a bad life cant believe you want money.

  7. He is proper size for Staffordshire Bull vs AmStaff. Yes we are a 501c3 rescue organization. Adoption fees help cover the cost of veterinary care for the dogs we take in. We also have a higher fee to avoid people who are not serious about the requirement of care for the dog. If one cannot afford $250 adoption fee (knowing all the cost is NOT for profit) they are likely not able to afford a vet visit. We've already spent more than this on this particular dog for his care to become healthy and adoptable, so his fee is only a partial reimbursement of what he has cost the group. This is pretty common for all dogs in rescue.

  8. And of course, there is no guarantee on pure breed status since he was found as a stray. He had dental floss in his ears which was used to stitch them after a home crop job. He is under 40lbs so we are guesstimating on the breed.

so will you destroy it rather than gift it to a good home?

i'm sorry but around here there is never a 250$ adoption fee that is a lil steep don't you think?? i am sure you could find him a good home and not charge anything might take a lil longer looking but is it not worth it?? around here it is maybe a 30-35$ adoption fee and that is because it is a non profit shelter and all that money goes back into care for the dogs and like you said you do not know if he is pure bred or not so someone could buy a pure bred hound at that price instead of adopting a dog they have no clue about i think you need to rethink your policies

  11. This is a standard adoption fee in our area. It is directly related to the costs of veterinary care.

We will not destroy him. We are a no-kill rescue and he is in a foster home. He's not being caged in a warehousing kennel. So, finding the right home comes with patience. If we find the perfect home for him but they cannot afford the adoption fee, arrangements can be made considering the adopter will have to invest in continuing training costs. This is another reason we have him listed as $250. The adopter will have to be able to afford the commitment required to his training. He's already made great improvements but after the rehoming, he'll need more training.

Unfortunately, because of his looks, he's one of the most popular dogs but usually inquired only by men who want to show of his looks as a trophy piece. He lives with a man now, the co-founder of the rescue and does fine. It just takes some time for him to warm up and it's not all men. He's not skittish, just apprehensive. We do not take in dogs which pose a danger to people.

Just some info on our area.. we work with the local animal control shelter which has the largest intake in Texas. In 2 hours the other day, they had 40 animals dumped. The average right now is about 90 PER DAY. Animals are disposable here like you would not believe! So we maintain higher standards than the shelter because we invest so much into them. However we assist the shelter in evaluations and other volunteer efforts because they are one of the few which will directly adopt out pit bulls. For example, the SHELTER's adoption fee is $75. We as a rescue make sure all the animals are healthy before adopting, which the shelter cannot do. We also keep the dogs for a minimum of one month to evaluate personality and look for any behavioral quirks requiring attention. Also, the adoption fee is a donation so it is a tax deductible expense.

Its my very kind advice to you dear that if you are really interested to hire a trainer that you should first extend the price first.250 dollars is not enough man.
