I came home tonight and my dog had quite a bit of swelling on the left side of his nose and upper lip.It looks like a golfball has been implanted in his upper lip.It was about closing time for the vet and I called and she told me to give him benedryl tonight and if she could she'd try and squeeze him in tomorrow evening. She said give him the adult dose.I'm just checking to make sure that's right. He was about 55 pounds before but it looks like he lost about 5 pounds overnight.Don't know what's wrong with him. What dose would you guys recommend.I'm really worried about him.

He may be dehydrated if he is looking thin!

Is he drinking or has the swelling interfered with it? Is he urinating normally or is it reduced amount and dark? Is his skin elastic (when you pull his scruff up does it go back down normally or does is stay up)? Is he lethargic?

I've given my 23lb peke half a 25mg benedryl when he got stung so a full 25mg tab sounds about right. (I've never had to give my pit any).

Ps if you know your dog and you're worried, you may want to go ahead and take him to the emergency vet JMO.

I've never messed with benedryl before, sounds like it comes in pill form.I got the idea it was a liquid maybe.I just got home from working this evening and that's what I came home to.I fed him and he ate alot, never noticed if he drank but he could eat so I figured he could drink. He was drooling on the side the swelling was on.As far as being lethargic, maybe a little. He gets up and acts ok,but not his usual self.Usually he's running back and forth and has energy to burn.Tonight he come out of his doghouse when I call, eat and walk around a little but thats about it.

It comes in 25mg per pill normally. you give 1 mg per lb of body weight. so a 55lb dogs gets 2 pills.

He may act a little depressed if he had a reaction to something but don't worry too much unless he is dehydrated.

If the swelling is not better by morning you can give another dose. BUT you should see an improvement by morning.

did you check the inside of his mouth for injuries or a bad tooth? You can give tablet or liquid. If there is something else going on you may need to take another course of action.

^ deffinatley check inside his mouth, could be any number of things (severe bee sting, splinters, quill, etc)

I checked his mouth. His teeth all look good and I couldn't see anything but swelling. It was kind of feverish feeling where it's swelled up.I just got back from Wal-Mart with the benedryl and I'm fixing to go out right now and give him some.Hopefully it'll do the trick.

Well, just gave him some benedryl. The swelling was a little worse,he's really got me worried about it.Hopefully, just a sting.Anyway, guess I'll just have to wait and see.I hope the vet can get him early tomorrow, but she sounds pretty busy.

Yea let us know how the bendryl worked out. I wonder tho was it a allergy reaction like a bee sting, and if not does it help out with swelling?

i had a bitch dog do the same thing last summer. and i couldent get it to stop i went from benydryl to Pennicillian and nothing worked. i put her to sleep ( not put her down) and really got down in her mouth and started checking it out. come to find out on her daily freedom romp on the farm she had ran into a stick somehow that had ran back to where there jaws and gums meet and left a 1 inch splinter in there. i removed the splinter and gave three doses of Pennicillian and she healed up great....

really get in her mouth and check around the swelling...

Just got back from the vet, basically an abcess of some sort. Most likely a splinter. We couldn't find anything, but she popped it and I got a bunch of medicine to give him for the next few days.He seems to feel a little better after popping it.

good thing you got to the vet! Abscesses are nasty if not treated right away. Thanks for the update!

Well the vet give me some kind of antibiotic for him.I give it twice a day.The original knot in his face has went down some,it actually busted and ran a bunch of nasty, bloody looking stuff out.But now his eye on the other side is a little meaty looking with some swelling on his lower eyelid, and it's a little runny,he's got a little cough on top of all his other problems.I weighed him today,he's lost 5 pounds.I don't know what all is going on but I have another vet appointment for in the morning.Hope we can get him fixed up.

hope the dog come's good, but let this be a lesson to you...don't ask people on a forum how to fix your dog, they DO NOT KNOW what is going on, they can't see the dog, all they can do is guess, and if you take their advise you could be putting your dogs life in jeopardy. go to the vet and don't experiment with what in this case will have no effect on treating the problem.
abscess' can be bad news if not delt with correctly, and if not cleared up properly can reappear later down the track.
best thing is prevention, if youve had the dog off running in scrub or thick bush or some other activity that may result in some type of injury, check your dog out thoroughly. i know in some cases, as in yours possibly you can not see the immediate problem, but you should always have a good eye on what is going on with your dog, if you know your dog/dogs you should be able to see the slightest little change in character/ shape or form, this is a good indication something is wrong. there are different methods in dealing with different types of injury and although i would like to go through some basic ones i can not, because this goes against what i first stated, and for you or somebody else to go ahead and try something i have explained without first being shown properly could end up causing a bigger problem, ie; infection etc.
good luck with that dog and i hope it all goes well for him and you.

I have to agree with you D's. I think it's ok to ask advise but no one here can really see your dog. You know your Bulldog better than anyone else, if they don't look right, it's time to see a vet!

I know people here can't see the dog,I've had him to the vet twice already. The vet give him some different medicine the 2nd time, swelling looks a lot better but he still isn't doing as well as I wish he would. He kind of picks at his food and has lost quite a bit of weight.Even noticed a little blood in his crap yesterday,If it don't straighten up he's going back to the vet.

What kind/type of oral antibiotics did your DVM script your dog? Is your dogs stomach tore up, nauzsia, drooling, vomitting? You never elaberated on the location of the abcess, details?

Either way you should take him back to the DVM.
