alot of bloodlines are still kept honest, tested, bred and culled. just because most don't breed that way doesn't mean it ain't happening.
i knew louis and i think he tried to keep his dogs "honest" but he would be the first to admit that he was not breeding what most would call "fastlane" dogs. he was a great man and i have nothing but admiration for him but was he the breeder that his father was? i bet lou would say no. is jack breeding the quality of dogs louis was? i would say no.
personally, i think the modern colby dogs are not much more than than a breed within a breed, kept around for reasons that are mostly sentimental.
i heard that the colby pepper bitch was pretty good but not anywhere in the league of the greats. i spent some time with the sam dog and while he was an impressive dog if i were to pick any dog from the colby family i've seen with my own eyes it would have to be zorro. he was on lou's yard in the early 90's, the pics i've seen of him online and in lou's book don't do him justice.

for the ppl how dont know about the colby line.. you are talking here like a chicken with out head about the colby line.
if you would be seriouse you dont would ask such stupid question about the colby line... colby = the purest and proven line since over 100years.

Very good post, and I'm in no way trying to insult you, or the Colby line of dogs. I dont care for TL though, but the dogs couldnt pick their owner!
I'm pretty sure I still have a pic of a male dog that's dam was pure Colby, and the sire was a well known producing son of Gr Ch Yellow. He was a big boy, 65 on the chain, but maintained the Colby colors/markings. Kept him on my yard for a friend for a few. I'll pm it to you, when I dig it out of storage.

I think if people on here dont know about the Colby line, they are probably on the wrong boards lol... They may be the purest line for 100 years, but thats as much as I can agree with in that statement.

Yeah Colby has its share of devout followers. It's like a religion.
Colby followers think all Colby's are game or produce high percentage game animals
Colby followers think that Colby is the only line out without paper hanging.
Colby followers think the dogs of today are the same as the dogs of yesterday.

    Have to disagree with you!
I think I could find one written down ped of some Colby dogs that did produce some winning stuff!
I had one Colby / Jeep female back in the mmid 90ties and she was a pretty good one!
I personally won´t mind feeding one!
At least I do think some people still keeping Colby dogs and are crossing it into their fastlane stuff, there has been some links and dogs mentioned in a similar thread!

Yes the Colby Line is pretty common within show and pet people, I don´t mind!

But like within the Mayfield thread there´s lots of talk and certainly no proof!

But I seriously think you rather would find a working Colby than Mayfield bred dogs!

I dont know why this nice article Dr. Lector posted turned into another mess. I was only stating BBT was speaking uninformed. I agree pure colby dogs do not have ability of todays haybrid mutants like i already stated. How could a pure line match todays fastlane dogs? Im not saying that. Colby dogs have there purpose, more than just history and pets. To say anything other is stupidity. You need a family like the Colby dogs to breed inbred lines too. Just because people arent broadcasting there working Colby dogs doesnt mean they are not out there, caus they are. Colby dogs have proven themselves over a century and i bet some of you naysayers dogs will never be heard of after theyre gone. And youll both be forgotten.

Icepick that´s what I´m talking about!
There is a reason why they are still crossing colby dogs into their stuff!

I look at the Colby family of dogs as a collectors item an antique a peice of history .. As far as performance goes well the people who I know breeding Colby dogs show them with the ADBA in conformation or do weight pull with them. I don't match dogs so I have no clue how they would stand up with today's performance dogs. Most people who own APBT's now a days own pets anyway regardless of what family of dogs they come from or how many proven dogs are behind them. I have 4 well bred pets nothing wrong with that and no they are not Colby dogs lol.

I'll let this stand and you can take from it what you will ... an e-mail exchange I had the other night with a friend of mine in Maryland. I'm pretty sure my friend was a Super Moderator here on GD several years ago prior to 2007, certainly a long time member, but hasn't posted on here since 2008. Maybe some will have an idea whom I'm talking about if you've been around a while. Anyway ...

She has 4 APBTs on chain spots on her yard. Three are from game-bred bloodlines ... "close-ups", and one is a Colby. This is what she had to say about the dog she got from Lou, straight off Lou Colby's yard in 2009 (copied from my e-mail, we were mostly talking about feeding) ...

"Health-wise he's doing great. his structure is nice, his muscle tone is finally starting to define itself and his coat is perfect~nice and shiney. never dry. all in all i'm REAL happy with him. he's strong as an ox. undoubtedly THE strongest dog i've ever owned. his will and drive are great and he keeps at an exercise longer than the others will, so i work him the most and honestly spend the most time with him. (truth be told, he's my favorite!)"

As to the "why" ... I prefer a certain bloodline? ... for stability, health, temperament and documented historical integrity.
"Do certain bloodlines tend to have a higher drive than others or make better fastlane dogs?" ... I would think so ... generally, they would be the ones that survived and promulgated would be my guess.

Perhaps for the average owner, it's as much a matter of perspective and personal preference as it is fastlane accomplishment, these modern days. I say I have a Colby ... someone else says they have ...

    etc etc etc

... and guess what ... FOR THE MOST PART, they are hardly "worked" anymore either and I attribute their survival to their historical significance, past accomplishments and name ... not NECESSARILY their drive or fastlane work. But that is just my uneducated guess because I'm not in the sport.

My point is that the integrity of those bloodlines as manifest by todays dogs are in GENERAL ... not what the originals were. Except in the context that they have been line-bred for decades and therefore by association, ASSUMED to maybe have SOME potential ... and Colby has done it the longest and with the most honest documentation.

All I really know is that I've only ever owned one Colby dog and will just have to wait and see what kind of drive this pup has. All dogs are individuals, but I can't argue with the integrity and potential that is there from the over 110 year old pure line-bred bloodline he's from.

So for the average person, not in the sport, it all boils down to personal preference, research, experience (yours, mine or others) and luck. After all that, I hope you can be happy with what you have. I know I am and that's ALL that matters.

Just because everyone you know keeps pets doesn't mean all those lines are hardly worked. The fact that you make dumb statements like that shows how much you actually know. It goes on all over the world and the reason you don't see pure colby dogs involved is because they are not bred to compete with the working lines. If they could win people would use them, it's that simple. There are example after example of dogs from the lines you just posted that are winning. I'm still waiting on the colby dogs...

The same can be said of staffs!

Staffs can and do hit hogs.
Staffs can and have been used for outs
Staffs can show And Staffs can pull
and any ignorant fool could use anything for box work
For each Colby example you give for anything I can give you many more Staff examples.

Modern Day Colby dogs are Gas House paper replicas.

The first bloodline you learn of is Colby.

People that breed or peddle pups Know how to emply marketing.
Right down to the pics posted here. Two brindle bodied white headed dogs were bred and the pick was a brindle body white headed dog.

Keep in mind this is probably the most hardy breed of all canines. So that piece of paper hanging on your living room has little to do with why. To think Colby was the only name never hung shows how little you know about the paper game.

Don´t know what y´all think of Dawnrest Kennels but he had a pure Colby Stud within his breeding called Lucky Stripe he was out of Colby´s Grit / Colby´s Thistle!
As Dawnrest claimed to breed performance dogs he might had a good reason for keeping some Colby?
