He produces good dogs. A lot of good dogs. In turn he charges and awful lot of money. He breeds an awful lot of dogs. He has a ton of puppies almost all the time. His percentages of good dogs from all the dogs is low, to say the least.

Tons of reasons to hate. Tons of reasons to appreciate. It is a 'to each his own' scenario as well as a 'buyer beware'.

The funny part to me has always been the ones who were truly in his inner circle. Basically the guy has like a thousand inner circles. He lets a few in and they are in the 'know', then in the other circle they are also in the 'know'. Then sometimes it comes to light that both groups in their respective 'knows' know things completely different than one another, on the same subject.

Most think the problem with him and the ADBA was with the number of dogs registered off Frisco, but that is only partially true. It was the number of dogs per litter that raised the eyebrows. All the Garner bitches were consistently throwing 8-9-10-11 puppies. Any one on here bred dogs and consistently threw 8 or more puppies in every litter?. Never a four or a five, never a two or three, always a 8 or better.

Basic economics says you have to have what the customer wants when the customer wants it or the customer will buy elsewhere. Since we are down to doing basic math if 7 people call for Litter #1 and Litter #1 only had four think about a way to make all 7 sales. Do the math.

And most look at that as a slight. I have no problem with it as the odds of getting a good dog are no different than if they were all registered accurately. It is good dogs being bred to good dogs and in turn producing some good dogs. If I were buying a dog my entire premise of paying for a dog would be to get a good dog. That yard is a good place to shop in search of a good dog. .

My hat is off to him. The object is to put out good dogs. He puts out good dogs. S

Great post, slim. Always very insightful posts.

I must say though if anybody breeds as many puppies as that man there's always a chance of getting a "good" dog. Surely not rocket science involved in figuring that one out. Why would people rather go to somebody else who has TG blood? Because people know that TG doesn't breed for the purpose of others with his blood. If I wanted more TG blood, the last place I would go would be TG. I'm sure anybody with common sense would do the same.

To be clear, him peddling dogs does not bother me personally. I have never started a TG thread, but when one comes up I'll state my opinion just like all his nut huggers do.

My Gramps had some of the nicest beagles anyone would choose to own. He had two sets of pens. The pens out front you could buy from but the pens in the back were off limits. The dogs out front were his young dogs and his pretty good dogs and the dogs in the back were as good as it gets, anywhere. The young dogs had to earn a spot in the back. He had that set up for years.

He had a folder of AKC papers, maybe hundreds. A buyer always got 'papers' with the dogs they bought. Most everyone got a pretty good dog, a dog with solid hunt and a fair pace/speed. The dogs had a 'full guarantee'. Bring them back for a trade, swap or money back. Get another dog and he would reach in the folder and get you a brand new set of papers. Odds are you would get a good dog but the papers seldom matched.

Even his dogs in the back did not have matching papers but he bred his best to his best and over time the family just got better and better.

When he was living he had a number of detractors. People would call him on his 'paperwork'. People always remembered the few crappy dogs he sold. People always talked about all the dogs he moved.

Then he passed. Now people speak of him in high reverence in regards to the good dogs he had and the good dogs they bought. The 'stack of papers' is a running joke now, spoke of with humor and understanding.

When Mr. Garner is long gone the same will be said about him, just like some of the old time greats. Nostalgia is a powerful thing. S

Thing is the majority of folk who buy a dog off Garner want a pet, now I'm not one for being a sheep. Why not own something unique and get a Colby bred dog?

Why not just adopt a petbull from the pound?

Here's why. The dogs, just like life, is 'To each his own'. If that is what someone wants and is willing to fork over that much cash, then it is exactly what they should do. Maybe a "Garner" dog is unique to them or to their area. Here in NC it has been said you can step out your door, throw a rock and odds are you will hit a Garner dog. Just that many. But that might not be so in GA, TN, TX, CA or Mexico for that matter.

I'm a lover of dogs that work, not so much where they came from or who they came from. As long as a dog does what he was bred to do or trained to do I'm his biggest fan. If one were to go to the pound and get a dog and then make him a world class flyball dog then I think there is nothing better. If a guy pays a boat load of money for a beagle and he hunts like mad or sniffs out bombs and dope at the airport, for me that is awesome. If a guy with a bulldog trains him in personal protection or runs up the roads breaking the laws of the Animal Welfare Act, then more power to him.

There is nothing wrong with selling a 'working' dog to a pet home but it is not exactly my cup of tea. And the most important thing with the last statement is that it is absolutely none of my business what other people do with their dogs much less where they get them. S

Just for the record, my last comment was just poking fun at the colby fans. I couldn't help it.
