Excited just got a 2011 Chevy Silverado: All Star Package 4X4 Crew Cab Short bed.

Anyway, long story short was looking at Leer caps and covers. I want to be able to throw two or more of my dogs in the bed and protect them from the cold. Any ideas or photos of setup.

Help greatly appreciated... Maybe considering steel dog crates or leer cap.

I have a insulated dog box,its made by regal dog boxes. Its perfect for two dogs. And i got mine for $300 or $350 ( i cant' remember) It says they are made in Ohio, but i found the guy that makes them in S.C.And i got it for half the price that was listed on the internet. They are warm in the winter( i put removable Plexiglass over the doors)and cool in the summer. They have nice vents that are open/closeable.And rain guards. And the biggest plus is i can load it and unload it with the help of my 100lb wife.I don't like toppers because you can't fit large 4 wheelers or other tall objects without removing it.And there's no way to separate the dog's,other than buying crates. And buy the time you buy a topper ,and a couple crates ,your way over the money that you would have spent on a nice box.

I just use regular dog crates and cover them with a tarp if it's cold or rainy. easiest and cheapest way and keeps the wind and rain off em. throw a blanket in there with em and they're quite comfy.

You use a plstic tarp??? can they breath or do you use canvass.??? Sounds like it could work good... Till I get some money to set it up right...

Was thinking about getting a travel trailer for long hunting trips...put the fam in during the ride and the dogs in at night... This way if I stay overnight at a hotel no PETA furmommies will call the Animal Control...

JamesT is right About the leer tops heavy ad cumbersome and they prob wouldn't be considered a proper holding area... That's all I need is to get the wrong groundskeeper or Person parking next to me and have alot of explaining to do.

Yeah, I use a big plastic tarp doubled up. I cover the tops, backs, and sides of the crates with it. since the front of the crates face the tailgate, I dont cover them. And I dont put anything in between the crates if the two dogs tolerate the sight of one another, that way I only have to use just one tarp. I'll try and find a picture of it for you. It's the cheapest and easiest way to keep rain and wind off of them. I use bungee cords to keep the tarps tightened against the crates so they dont flap around. I drove 8.5 hours on a trip before this way in cold and rain, and the dogs did great, nice and dry.

That's a solid trip man... Pics would be appreciated.

You use plastic/wire travel crates or metal... I'mma try it with plastic travel crates and pray they dont eat through. Try a trip to Western PA that way should take about 4.5 both ways.

    ... Thanks for the input.

I used the wire crates. if i used the plastic ones, the dogs would eat out of them in a heartbeat, lol. one of mine is an escape artist, so i zip-tied all the edges of the wire crate for extra security and used rock-climbing clips (can't remember the right name for them atm, lol) for added security on the door.

I can't find a good pic, but I will try and set it up again today so I can take one for you, if I have time. It's not the prettiest way to travel, lol, but it certainly gets the job done....

Well, I haven't gotten a chance to go out and set it back up again for a pic, but I did find an old pic. It's not the best, but it kinda gives you a better idea at least of what I did. Hope this helps!

When i set it up again, I'll take better pics of exactly how I did it, so you can see how it looks on the outside of the crates...

i just picked up a cheap used camper shell and use crates. 200 bucks in total (i had to buy two new specific crate sizes for the way my truck is set up though because of a possible move, had i not had to do that, 100 bucks in total for just the shell.)

haha, sheesh, that sux. i do have to reinforce my crates with wire, zip ties, and/or carabiner clips, or else they'll bust out. but so far, so good. im glad, cuz those aluminum dog boxes aren't exactly cheap!

I appreciate the help... It worked for a trip Allentown Pa over the weekend. No one gave it a second look and they were dry and comfortable.:D

No Furmommy complaints at all... I did however decide for long hauls I'm just going to buy a toyhauler trailer and leave them in their over night inside wire crates...no matter weather conditions this way nothing can be said if I'm staying at hotel and no one can watch the dog's. Take em' with me in 100 degrees or 10 below.

    What you guys think??/

For short trips cover the wire crates

More than a night bring the trailer if I cant leave em' home.

Other than the crate and tarp idea Cabellas has the zip up covers for the crates. They are water repellant and will keep the dog warm in a regular crate. Plus they fold up and store easily when not is use. I see a lot of duck hunters use them in the cold and wet. S

If I put dogs in a wire crate that close, I would have a scandal on my hands. I use typical crates and depending who is riding where, I put a cut piece of plywood in between them so that they cannot see each other. I've done the tarp thing, and it has worked, but in a perfect world I would break down and buy a camper.
