I think its funny that all the people that should know better are saying they wouldn't breed to the proven dog with no pedigree. What happened to breed the best to best? A bulldog doesn't know how it is bred, let alone how to read. I am a pedigree junkie and love a well bred dog, but I have seen a lot of dogs with awesome pedigrees pack it in early.

NOthing's a guarantee, papered or not. but as stated, if you're willing to put in the time, $ and hard work to see the results AND if you're honest enough to cull what you're not happy with, or, if not, keep what you've created, then go for it. but be honest. this breed already has enough shit dogs in it. simple enough: be part of the solution, or part of the problem. your call. just do right by the breed!

I had a unpapered female that I bred to a papered male some said it would be a shit breeding but you shoulda see how they changed their mind when they saw them hunt, but she was a hell of a dog so was the papered male I wasnt so interested in pedigrees at the time so I could careless about bloodlines so if he is a true bulldog and your not so into papers go for it but if carrying on an established family is what you want find a good papered stud

every dog i have doesn't have papers but i know how they're bred . i still know certain blood just doesn't work so no matter how good they are i'm not wasting my time even when they're from my yard . the main thing is if your willing to breed then keep them all . getting a 2nd gen from it and not knowing how that dog's bred . it would seem if it works the 2nd time someone knows how it's bred . usually a family bred dog .

I think instead of the all too typical "papers or no papers" worn out old debate, that the original question begs to know "known vs unknown" as to chances of quality, given the dog in question is one of desired attributes.
In answer to the OP's question to me.......yes, I have known of people breeding to dogs of completely unknown breeding. And no, the qualities of the unknown dog rarely prevailed when bred, no matter the quality of the bitch it was bred to.
As AGK said, and I paraphrase.... Anything can happen. Any dog might produce and/or any "nick" may happen with any two dogs. It's the likelihood you must question. To me, it's a SIMPLE matter of familiarity of ongoing traits being far and above better than the usual outcome without that familiarity. It's all a matter of likelihoods, based on what you know of the dogs being bred. You cannot figure your likelihoods with the unknown. Simple as that.

...a few honest(rare) dog-men ..leave one side blank/un-known,,on the ped, even if they strike it lucky...if ya look back on most dogs peds ya find them, an the people that used them hit it rich and carry on the line while other's get so hung up on papers for the rest of their lifes and never have a tail off a good dog..so if ya think it will work ,,,why not..

It's not hard to hang a ped. It is hard to maintain that lie when people who you are lying to do their homework and verify the breedings.

As to the original question. Yeah, I would breed to a dog of unknown origin if it was the absolute best dog I knew or knew of. Really great dogs always have distinguishing traits that were obviously bred into them, over time, by men. If this is such a phenomenal dog, I would start doing some real work tracking down its history. It would have to be something really, really special for me to waste my time doing all that work.

....WOULD YA WORRY ABOUT DOING THE HOME WORK IF YA HAVE A GOOD RUN FROM THIS LITTER....DON'T THINK SO..???..AS LONG AS THERE TURNING OUT...IN REALITY IT WOULD NOT BE VERY HARD TO START A NEW FAMILY LINE FROM THESE BREEDINGS ESP; IF YA GET A GOOD RUN FROM THE FIRST FEW LITTERS.......THEN YOU HAVE THE PED'S FROM WHERE IT STARTED JUST B-CAUSE IT'S THE 21st CENTURY IT'S NOT IMPOSSIBLE..........................>>>????????????

Well I wouldn't breed it without doing my homework. I'd travel every avenue, turn over every stone and knock on every door before spending 2 plus years of my time, money and space on an experiment.

There are so many great stud dogs with honest peds out there. Is this dog really better than every available stud dog I can find that would have a high probability of clicking with my bitches?

My preference is to do my due diligence well before a breeding. And in my opinion, if a dog was so outstanding then somewhere out there, someone knows something.

also good advice.... its a percentage game to me i personally want high percentage litters and would make breedings based on that....
also if the dog is os great what did he produce before? someone else must have found him good enough to want to breed to him
also remember performance and production are unrealted meaning a good performer does not automatically translate to a good producer.... all these things would be floating around my head before i even start to put thought into breeding
