Does anyone have any tips on walking your dog?? Natas pulls big time on his leash, I try to pull him back but if I do he cowars right down like i'm going to beat him. I don't want to scare him but he's getting impossible to walk. I don't really know what to do.

Well Depending On How Much Your Dog Weighs And How Strong They Are That Could Be Annoying. With Gremlin I Pul Back No The Leash And Tell Him No And It Works For A While Put Then It Is Back To The Same Pulling. Someone On Here Will Have Some Great Advice For U.

Teach your dog that walking with a loose lead by your side is a good thing. When he pulls, pop the leash and say "no pull". When he is walking by your side, tell him what a good boy he is and tap your leg and say "close walk". Every time he is by your side, praise him by saying what a good close walk he's doing. To get him by your side, you should carry treats with you and keep one in your hand (the hand on the side you want him to walk on). You'll have to bend down enough so that the treat in your hand is right in front of his nose - this will keep him from hopping up to try to get the treat. Walk like that and as he gets going, tell him what a good close walk it is. If you can continue this, while tapping your leg and saying "close", eventually you should be able to tap your leg and say close, and he should walk by your side no problem. Crappy thing is, you have to do this all the time until he learns. Practice inside, in your back yard, wherever you have some room to put him on a leash and go.

Pinch collars work great while training a close walk.

Just get a choke collar or get a walking harness.

Oh, and I hope your dog is still a young one, because it's hard as hell to get an adult to not pull.

Take'm to classes and teach him or if the time and money are an issue dont worry bout it. Make him drag a chain if he wants to pull and just give him a good workout for his health. They like to pull and its like a game to them they just want to win at everything they do! Heck I use make one of mine pull me around the streets on a skateboard. It was like the X-Games sometimes when she got after a dog or cat BUT IT WAS FUN!!!

thanks Dozer I will have to try that. He is 11 months and 63 pounds, i'm just a girl and not as strong as him so it is getting quite annoying with him pulling that hard. Plus when he's trying to walk ahead of me and not paying attention to what he's doing it's hard to keep him out of the road. I tried a choker for a short while but he's so stubborn he would just keep choking himself

True, you could take him to classes if he is well socialized and good with other dogs. If you didn't want to take him to classes, I'm sure you could call some dog schools in your area and ask them their opinions. It seems that most dog trainers are always courteous when asking them questions.

He's not friendly towards other dogs at all so clases are definitely a no go. I know when I had my rotti my ex husband used the heel command and would pull back on the leash or stop walking all together and/or change direction just to keep his attention and that worked awesome. I've tried that with Natas though and he is definitely not as easy to train as Zeus was.

  11. Take Him Running If You Are In Good Condition Start Runing And Slow Down And Then Start Again And Stop An So On But Each Time Slow Down To A Walk For Longer Periods Of Time This Will Defenately Get His Attention On You Pretty Soon He'll Consentrate On You And What You Want Him To Do Make Sure To Praise Him It Worked For Me

I wouldn't say that he's not as easy to train, I'd say he just doesn't want to listen lol. Just takes a lot of practice. But I think when you find the right method that seems to be working a bit, you should stick to it and just practice as much as possible. I'm still working on it, and I hate it. Walking through a neighborhood half bent over does wonders on a body, but it's doing the trick too.

Oh and I forgot... if you try the treat thing, don't forget to give him a treat when he's doing really well, and then pull out another treat and start all over again. Mine pouts if I tease too much lol

a choke collar and a just a little yelling of don't pull! pretty much worked for me. ofcourse i used treats everytime he obeys. if ur gonna try a choke collar use a bit large one because pits have such high tolerence for pain, a regular choker is useless. don't pull command worked really good for me.. but soon im gonna start my dogs on weight pulling.. so i'll be telling him to pull.. lol

a pinch collar if used properly is a good tool. that way you can get the dog in a good heal position and praise him verbally and with treats.

Good trainer, pinch or choke, and you also learning from the trainer. A dog in public should know how to behave, especialy this breed and all of the attention that is focused on it.

what exactly is a pinch collar and how would you use it properly??

Pinch collars, also called prong collars, are those metal collars that are supposed to poke and prod the skin when you pop it. It causes discomfort to the dog, which in turn teaches them that what they are doing, shouldn't be done. They are to be placed up high on the dog's neck. When, say you are using it to keep from pulling, you pop it, don't just haul off and jerk it back and pull on it, you would just pop your leash back. You'll learn pretty quickly how hard to do it to get your dog to mind. I can take my female out for a walk on the pinch collar and she won't pull a bit, but when she is on a regular collar, she walks me...(we're still workin on that lol).

Oh, and pinch collars are usually more recommended because they don't stay "locked up" like a choke and doesn't cause damage to the dog's esophagus like a choke can.
