They aren't encouraged to do that because of several factors.

    1. They aren't bred for that task. At all. It specifically goes against what the dog is actually bred for therefore there are other breeds that do that job more naturally and with less training because it's their actual job and they've been bred for that specific purpose.

    2. They have a bad enough reputation as is. Last thing the world needs is to turn these dogs onto humans. In the wrong hands, which is like 80% of the people who now own them, these are and can be very dangerous dogs when turned onto or encouraged to engage humans. It's going against the grain with the breed. Very few of them take to it naturally because it goes against what they were bred for.

It's not that they can't do it, its that they shouldn't. You'll go through many before you find that one that will excell at it to the levels of IPO, IGP, Schutzhund or whaever they are calling it these days which is why you rarely see them used in that aspect.

There are other fighting breeds but you don't see them being used mainly. For a good reason. Same reason you don't see a ton of gamedogs performing at a IGP competition.

They got a hard enough time in the publics eyes as is. Using them for human work is counterproductive to the breeds image and original purpose IMO, worth about 2 cents.

All it takes is one mishap. This breed don't get second chances like others do, they get put down and publicly crucified instead.

I can use a sledge hammer to pound a screw in but it would make more sense to use a screwdriver no?.

I would just like to put my comment about the watchdogs Big Thor stuff… I don’t know about all the other lines Watchdog kennels was running but Big Thor produced very well in the fast lane. Especially when crossed! Mingman had some very successful crosses with the IBM stuff and also the old Bandit line. They were very intelligent and was right up there with any other top lines in that era. Just my 2 cents!
