So a question arose. Do you look for a game hound that can outlast a dog in a race? Or a hound that can outrun one real quick? I myself personally like one that can run fast and long...... But breed more for a long runner and hope to get a sprinter with long wind

One that runs hard, but can run hard for a prolonged amount of time is best for me. But I have heard opinions of people who don't want to breed to a dog that took say 2:00 to get it done........ Say that is too long and they want one that will get it done quicker.......

I'm not tryin to be there all night EVERY night. If the sprinter will run himself into the ground still runnin, why not use him? If I have a distance runner and a sprinter of equal heart, sprinter

I don't really care in that one is going to get certain dogs which are one or the other, and the little bit more rare ones which are both, should you be in these dogs long enough.

What I DO concern myself with is to be adept at KNOWING what I see with each dog. There is often a place for one commodity or the other that you mentioned.

I think everybody loves a short day at the office, but ones energy levels should be sustainable when asked to work overtime, because that's when test is real.

Yea we discussed it more in depth after I posted that. I believe my biggest concern was in n my eyes feeling like if you never seen one run a long race how could you feel confident that it would or could if needed.

School should be able to give you a good idea.like say in class does said dog pace itself or is it balls to the wall from the get.Had a friend lose one cause it was a balls to the wall type.It was suggested he gon have to get him ready for the ling haul cause if he don't get it done early he gon gas out.He didn't listen and he took a L

That should be "long haul ".

You put the right keep on the right dog. The dog dictates the keep.

I'll take the quick one vs the one outlasting/surviving a long haul but this is a confusing topic.

It was confusing to me, his theory that is. He looks down on a dog that can't get it done in under 45 mins, and I on the other hand wouldnt like one that hadn't been longer than 45 mins. But everyone has a diff take on about every subject with these dogs

If you're talking about competition only, there is a place for both type dogs mentioned by Cage. One usually prefers getting the envelope sooner, rather than later, however.

If you're breeding dogs, you'll be awakened to the fact that not all dogs are going be box dogs...sooner or later, but there is always a place for one which is not one, yet is a game dog. If not, your tenure will be short.

We all want winners. I would, personally, be prouder to have a game loser that went the distance than to have a destroyer that gassed out and lost his drive.

Yes the ability to stay the course over a long haul is a must to me. Now if one always gets it done early, that's not a problem to me.... But at some point I'd like to see just how deep his well is

Cage, I agree. Especially when and if you're breeding dogs. And as far as wanting to win quickly, all well and good. YET...............as I've told many......I don't want to be the one shitting my pants at the hour mark.

The well only needs to be deep enough to make it back. I think thats the whole point. Showtime the only thing that matters is you both get to ride back.

  20. You all have good points .some say that if a hound never goes the distance his well is questionable. I'm just happy he hunts lol.
