So whats the deal with dogs that wont finish, quit on top with no damage, wont scratch after dominating opponent. How do they rank on the cur list so to speak? If a dog is destroying a dog and the losing dog has done nothing to make him cur and he stops or wont scratch can he be labeled a cur or just a dog that wont finish?Just food for thought and keeping the discussion going

I would say won't finish In nature alot of animals will stop once they have beaten the other ..some people ask for a scratch to a pile so they think they can claim something ..too me they can claim shame for not picking up

To me, the ones who quit on top are the worse kind of cur.

There were two types of dogs, the Hank/Boomerang and the Hank/Giroux. The Hank/Boomerang type were great dogs, they could battle and were dead game. The Hank/Giroux dogs were weird and squirrelly acting; they would make you dizzy with their whirling and turning. Some were game and some were curs, I think Gunner had something to do with that. The Hank/Boomerang dogs were straight ahead and wouldn't turn. My hank dogs could have been as famous as GR CH Buck, if not better. On the right day Jumbo could have whipped Buck. Hank Jr. was a good dog; he beat a sixty pound dog when he weighed forty-six pounds. I was impatient and matched him into Buck a little earlier than I should have. John B. of S.T.P. kennels didn't want to match into me, I had to sneak into Buck; I had someone in New York match into him, then showed up with Jumbo Jim. There was nothing wrong with Buck, but on the right day I could have beat him with Jumbo Jim. Hank Jr would have chewed him up and spit him out. If you ever heard of a dead game dog, Jumbo Jim would make the hair stand up on your back! Buck had him dead at one hour; he stopped breathing his tail stopped moving and his bowels let loose. Everyone said it was over, that Jumbo Jim was dead. Buck was having a field day with him shaking him all over the pit, but I think this actually revived Jumbo Jim; as we noticed he was trying to grab a leg hold. He came back to life; people at pitside couldn't believe it when Jumbo Jim got on his feet and started walking Buck around the pit.
Jim made two more scratches and at 1:55 Jumbo was to scratch, he went limp in my arms and could not make it. He was counted out. Jumbo was sired by Hank Jr. and out of Gina Blue Eyes. I told them to bring Buck close and when they did Jumbo stretched his neck out trying to reach Buck.

What about this one Icepick?I knew I remebered reading this, but couldn't remember what story.

One out of how many? The dog must have ate when someone wasnt paying attention, or something lol. Different people use different keeps (obviously), and when to feed one last before a show is a matter of opinion/experience. You get one that isnt properly emptied out at show time and shitting in the box is your last worry.
If letting loose of the bowels is a sign of shock, then what about those dogs that I used to hear about (pre 76) shitting the box in under :20, while on all fours, but usually while they were going backwards? From what I understand, after they shit the box, they usually stood the line, or were looking for an exit strategy. ;)

Ha ha ha Shitting in the box is a way of throwing in the towel.

I don't know,it was a good story tho.I thought what the guy was saying was not shock, but the final stage of shock.Even if you are empty there is still some food that takes a while do digest, maybe that is what happened?I just thought of that story when it was mentioned, and then when I re-read it yesterday figured I'd post it.

    @Sea Serpent

Yeah that's from the Captain America interview that's in the History section.

Ah shit, now we talking about SHIT??? Now thats my kind of topic LMAO.

There are many reasons why a dog will shit during strenuous activities, main one being dog was not emptied out properly, another could be sick to his stomach, another could be like the term scared shitless that he shit himself LOL, last but not least is when the dog has NO control over his own Bowels. So as shitty as it might sound , shitting can show you some signs for a particular situation, you just have to know and read it right. LMAO

It could have been a sign of deep shock RRL, but my point was most of the ones I read about shitting the box (pre 76) was for other reasons, like what Saiyagin was talking about lol...
If the dog was properly emptied at the end of its keep, before the show, there was little (if any) to let loose. There were other benefits to having the dog properly emptied the most obvious was coming in on weight.

Back pre 76)Even emptied out as good as you could there still will be something come out when his insides start failing once that starts you need to do the right thing. , you allready look like a mooreon so see what you are working with, and go home.

  13. I cannot believe that their is a post that is called "what is YOUR definition of a cur"...the definition of a cur should be universal and known as a dog that quits. Plain and simple. Now if a dog that has formerly shown him as TRUE game and then quits in one fight, you should have put him through a test with a better dog and seen if he'd keep going.

ME TOOO!!!! Thats what I had a lot of when I started long ago when i started there were alot of Paladen dogs and they would do that We tried every thing to straighten that shit out at the end it was the whole paladen dogs we had to out to stop it. i hated that shit.Allways when you were hunting you would be way ahead and in your mind the whole time you would be nerves as a cat about him stoping on top.it sucked.

I haven't seen many paladin hounds but I've seen it several times in paz dogs. I've seen some pretty talented paz dogs too including a friend of mine here having paz Jr on his yard for a summer back in like 97 or 98. What a beast of a dog Jr was.
Triple j, do you think its a passed on trait or just a trait of an individual? I have always felt its passed down myself which made me turn away from breeding into a heavy bred paz dog. My ex partner had a son off Jr that had mouth like a vice, that bitch broke everything put in her mouth.

I can tell you what makes a cur ...
GENETICS AND OWNERS ... but with the owners its not from breedings, its from not knowing how to treat their dog, pushing them to hard to early, poor keeps, poor health, poor environment, not seeing or knowing signs your dog is making, the list goes on and on!! Most good dogmen will tell you they can make ANY dog quit. Things that'll make a dog quit quick is being winded, heated, n stressed. I've seen a dog, very famous dog, keep hold of a ... Pig ... Even while having a heart attack, needless to say he didn't make it. A very wise dogman once told me that dogs have bad days too ... Just like us, some days are just off and some days are Fucking great! Neither of us are machines, but remember machines break too!!!

Oh LORD! Paladin.... He was a "one of a kind" thats for sure, because as you said Triple J he may be the worse producing "great" dog of all times! That "line" is a damn curse!

Paz jr was a beast but that son you are talkin about J.R. i didnt think he had all that much mouth i always thought of him as a decent game dog but not much mouth and not much ability general ike rag dolled him spottin 15 pounds dude and that nogamo dog down from crock a moe beat him up pretty bad remember i healed him up after both those rolls.

  20. Erie Outlawz

    Erie Outlawz CH Dog

They arent machines theres awhole bunch of reasons why one quits and its easy to say well you should have tested him harder with a better dog sometimes thats why one gets matched cause you couldnt find that better dog for a roll sometimes it not the dogs fault they quit like poor conditioning sickness worms list goes on and on most of the time its easy like u say they quit they a cur but not always...
